Level 1 — Foundation (CEFR: A1)
Unit 3 — Referring to Yourself and Others
Lesson 2 — SER: Identity and Permanent Characteristics
Lesson Overview
Level: 1 — Foundation Unit: 3 — Referring to Yourself and Others Lesson: 2 of 7 Estimated Time: 75–90 minutes for initial study, plus daily practice
What this lesson covers:
- The full present tense conjugation of ser
- All uses of ser: identity, definition, origin, material, time, characteristics, relationships, passive voice
- Ser in ministry vocabulary: theological statements, role descriptions, identity declarations
- The speed drill: conjugation under 10 seconds
- Ministry sentences using all six forms
- How ser functions in the declarations and definitions that appear constantly in preaching
What this lesson does NOT cover:
- Estar (Lesson 3)
- The ser / estar distinction (Lesson 4)
- Past and future tenses of ser (Level 2 and above)
Why This Lesson Matters for Interpreters
The verb ser is the backbone of theological language. Nearly every declarative statement about God, Christ, human identity, salvation, and the nature of the church uses ser. Consider:
God is love. — Dios es amor. Jesus is Lord. — Jesús es Señor. We are saved. — Somos salvos. You are a new creation. — Eres una nueva criatura. He is the way, the truth, and the life. — Él es el camino, la verdad y la vida. I am the light of the world. — Yo soy la luz del mundo. We are the body of Christ. — Somos el cuerpo de Cristo.
Every one of these statements is constructed from ser. None of them uses estar. The interpreter who cannot produce ser forms reflexively cannot produce theological Spanish fluently — which means they cannot interpret preaching, testimony, altar calls, or prayer without constant hesitation.
Ser is also the verb of self-definition. Every time a speaker introduces themselves, states their role, or declares their identity in Christ, they use ser. Every time a preacher states who God is or who the believer is, they use ser. This is not occasional vocabulary — it is the grammatical core of the interpreter’s most frequent task.
The Present Tense of Ser
Conjugation Table
| Pronoun | Form | Pronunciation |
|---|---|---|
| yo | soy | soy (rhymes with English boy) |
| tú | eres | EH-res |
| él / ella / usted | es | es |
| nosotros | somos | SO-mos |
| vosotros | sois | soys — Spain only; not used in Latin America |
| ellos / ellas / ustedes | son | son |
The Speed Drill
The curriculum’s requirement is that you conjugate ser aloud in full present tense in under 10 seconds. This means approximately 1.5 seconds per form — which is fast enough that no form requires conscious retrieval.
Practice sequence: soy, eres, es, somos, son
(Skip vosotros for Latin American production. Five forms: soy, eres, es, somos, son.)
Count the seconds with a timer. The first day you attempt this, 10 seconds will feel fast. After a week of daily practice, 5 seconds is achievable. After two weeks, you should be producing the sequence in under 4 seconds with zero hesitation.
Why speed matters: An interpreter producing a sentence with ser does not have 1.5 seconds to select the right form — they have a fraction of a second. The form must arrive as automatically as a native word. The speed drill is not about impressing yourself with fast recitation — it is about building the automaticity that real-time interpretation requires.
The Uses of Ser
1. Identity and Definition
The most fundamental use: stating what something or someone is.
Dios es amor. — God is love. (1 John 4:8) Jesús es el Hijo de Dios. — Jesus is the Son of God. La Biblia es la Palabra de Dios. — The Bible is the Word of God. El pecado es transgresión de la ley. — Sin is transgression of the law. La fe es la certeza de lo que se espera. — Faith is the assurance of what is hoped for. (Hebrews 11:1) La gracia es el favor inmerecido de Dios. — Grace is the unmerited favor of God.
Interpreter note: Definitional statements in preaching often come in series — a preacher defining multiple attributes or aspects in succession. Dios es santo. Dios es justo. Dios es misericordioso. Each one uses a different ser form (es) — but the form itself is constant. What changes is the predicate. Train the es form to be so automatic that all cognitive resources go to the predicate vocabulary.
2. Origin and Nationality
Soy de los Estados Unidos. — I am from the United States. Es de Colombia. — He/She/You is from Colombia. Somos americanos. — We are Americans. Son de México. — They are from Mexico.
Ministry context: Missionaries introduce themselves constantly — where they are from, their organization, their country. Soy de… and somos de… are among the first sentences a missionary interpreter produces in a new context.
3. Profession and Role
Soy misionero. — I am a missionary. Es pastor. — He is a pastor. Eres intérprete. — You are an interpreter. Somos evangelistas. — We are evangelists. Son líderes de la iglesia. — They are church leaders.
Note on articles: Professions and roles after ser typically omit the indefinite article in Spanish: Soy misionero (not Soy un misionero). This contrasts with English (I am a missionary). The article is added when a modifier is present: Soy un misionero experimentado (I am an experienced missionary).
4. Characteristics and Qualities
Dios es bueno. — God is good. Cristo es fiel. — Christ is faithful. El Espíritu Santo es santo. — The Holy Spirit is holy. Somos nuevas criaturas. — We are new creations. La Palabra es viva y eficaz. — The Word is living and active. (Hebrews 4:12)
These are permanent or essential characteristics — qualities that belong to the subject by nature or theological declaration. This is the contrast with estar, which handles temporary states (Lesson 3).
5. Relationships
Él es mi hermano en Cristo. — He is my brother in Christ. Son los hijos de Dios. — They are the children of God. Somos coherederos con Cristo. — We are co-heirs with Christ. Eres hija del Rey. — You are a daughter of the King.
6. Time and Date
Son las tres de la tarde. — It is three in the afternoon. (from Lesson 3) Es el domingo de Resurrección. — It is Resurrection Sunday. Hoy es el día de salvación. — Today is the day of salvation.
7. Material and Composition
El templo es de piedra. — The temple is made of stone. La Biblia es de papel. — The Bible is made of paper. Este edificio es de madera. — This building is made of wood.
8. The Ser Passive (Event Location and Occurrence)
La conferencia es en el auditorio. — The conference is in the auditorium. (where an event occurs) La reunión es el martes. — The meeting is on Tuesday. El culto es a las diez. — The service is at ten.
Critical distinction: This use of ser — location of an event — is one of the areas where ser and estar are most easily confused. Ser describes where/when an event takes place. Estar describes where a person or object is located (Lesson 3). La conferencia es en el auditorio (the conference takes place in the auditorium — ser) vs. El pastor está en el auditorio (the pastor is located in the auditorium — estar).
9. Theological Identity Declarations
A category unique to ministry language — statements about the believer’s identity in Christ. These appear in preaching, altar calls, discipleship, and pastoral encouragement. All use ser.
Eres amado por Dios. — You are loved by God. Son perdonados. — They are forgiven. Somos salvos por gracia. — We are saved by grace. Eres una nueva criatura. — You are a new creation. (2 Corinthians 5:17) Somos más que vencedores. — We are more than conquerors. (Romans 8:37) Son llamados según su propósito. — They are called according to his purpose. (Romans 8:28)
These declarations are among the most emotionally charged and spiritually significant moments in ministry. An interpreter who can produce them without hesitation — who has somos más que vencedores ready the instant the preacher says we are more than conquerors — delivers the declaration with the weight it deserves. An interpreter who stumbles on the verb form deflates it.
Ministry Sentences: All Six Forms
Practice these until every form is as natural as a common word.
Soy (yo): Soy misionero de los Estados Unidos. — I am a missionary from the United States. Soy el intérprete del pastor esta noche. — I am the pastor’s interpreter tonight. Soy creyente desde hace diez años. — I have been a believer for ten years. “Yo soy el camino, la verdad y la vida.” — “I am the way, the truth, and the life.” (John 14:6) “Yo soy la vid; vosotros sois las ramas.” — “I am the vine; you are the branches.” (John 15:5 — note sois is in the biblical text but would be ustedes son in spoken contemporary Latin American Spanish) “Yo soy el que soy.” — “I am who I am.” (Exodus 3:14)
Eres (tú): Eres bienvenido aquí. — You are welcome here. Eres una nueva criatura en Cristo. — You are a new creation in Christ. ¿Eres creyente? — Are you a believer? Tú eres el Cristo, el Hijo del Dios viviente. — You are the Christ, the Son of the living God. (Matthew 16:16)
Es (él / ella / usted): Dios es amor. — God is love. Jesús es Señor. — Jesus is Lord. El Espíritu Santo es nuestro Consolador. — The Holy Spirit is our Comforter. Él es fiel y justo para perdonar. — He is faithful and just to forgive. (1 John 1:9) ¿Usted es el pastor de esta iglesia? — Are you the pastor of this church?
Somos (nosotros): Somos embajadores de Cristo. — We are ambassadors of Christ. (2 Corinthians 5:20) Somos el cuerpo de Cristo. — We are the body of Christ. Somos salvos por gracia mediante la fe. — We are saved by grace through faith. Somos más que vencedores. — We are more than conquerors. Somos americanos aquí para servirles. — We are Americans here to serve you.
Son (ellos / ellas / ustedes): Son los hijos de Dios. — They are the children of God. Ustedes son sal de la tierra. — You are the salt of the earth. (Matthew 5:13) Ustedes son luz del mundo. — You are the light of the world. (Matthew 5:14) Son perdonados en el nombre de Jesús. — They are forgiven in the name of Jesus. ¿Son ustedes el equipo misionero? — Are you the missionary team?
Practice Exercises
Exercise 1 — Conjugation Speed Drill
Say the five Latin American forms of ser in present tense aloud: soy, eres, es, somos, son
Time yourself. Target progression:
- Day 1: under 10 seconds
- Day 3: under 7 seconds
- Day 7: under 5 seconds
- Day 14: under 3 seconds with zero hesitation
Repeat three times per session. Then add pronoun + form: yo soy, tú eres, él es, nosotros somos, ustedes son — target: under 8 seconds.
Exercise 2 — Use Identification
For each sentence, identify which use of ser is present (identity, origin, role, characteristic, relationship, time, material, event location, theological declaration).
- Dios es eterno. → characteristic
- Soy de Texas. → origin
- El culto es el domingo a las diez. → time / event
- Somos hijos de Dios. → relationship / theological declaration
- Ella es pastora. → role
- La reunión es en el salón principal. → event location
- Eres perdonado. → theological declaration
- El altar es de madera. → material
- Son creyentes desde niños. → characteristic / identity
- Jesús es el Hijo de Dios. → identity / definition
Exercise 3 — Form Production Drill
A partner reads a sentence starter in English. You complete it in Spanish using the correct form of ser.
- I am a missionary → Soy misionero/a
- God is holy → Dios es santo
- We are saved → Somos salvos
- You are forgiven → Eres perdonado/a (tú) / Usted es perdonado/a (usted)
- They are the children of God → Son los hijos de Dios
- Jesus is Lord → Jesús es Señor
- You (plural) are the light of the world → Ustedes son la luz del mundo
- I am from the United States → Soy de los Estados Unidos
- She is the pastor → Ella es la pastora
- We are ambassadors of Christ → Somos embajadores de Cristo
Exercise 4 — Theological Declaration Series
Say each declaration aloud, producing the correct ser form without hesitation. These are the declarations most frequently heard in evangelical and Pentecostal preaching.
Dios es bueno. / Dios es fiel. / Dios es amor. / Dios es santo. / Dios es justo. / Dios es misericordioso.
Jesús es el Señor. / Jesús es el Salvador. / Jesús es el camino. / Jesús es la verdad. / Jesús es la vida. / Jesús es el Hijo de Dios.
Somos salvos. / Somos nuevas criaturas. / Somos el cuerpo de Cristo. / Somos más que vencedores. / Somos embajadores de Cristo.
Eres amado. / Eres perdonado. / Eres libre. / Eres una nueva criatura. / Eres hijo/hija de Dios.
Time the complete run of all twenty-five declarations. Target: under 45 seconds with no hesitation.
Exercise 5 — Record and Evaluate
Record yourself delivering the following passage — a sample sermon opening — aloud at natural preaching pace. Play it back. Evaluate every ser form for correct selection and natural delivery.
“Esta noche quiero hablarles de quién es Dios. Dios no es simplemente una fuerza cósmica — Dios es una persona. Dios es amor. Dios es luz. Dios es santo. Y ustedes, hermanos — son amados por este Dios. No son olvidados. No son rechazados. Son los hijos del Rey. Yo soy testigo de lo que Dios puede hacer en una vida rendida a Él. Somos más que vencedores a través de aquel que nos amó.”
Interpreter-Specific Application
Scenario: Altar Call — Identity Declarations
The preacher is making an altar call and speaking directly to people who have raised their hands:
“I want to speak directly to you — yes, you. God sees you. You are not forgotten. You are not too far gone. You are loved. You are wanted. You are a person for whom Christ died. And if you give your heart to him tonight, you will be a child of God.”
Your interpretation:
“Quiero hablarle directamente a usted — sí, usted. Dios le ve. Usted no está olvidado/a. No está demasiado lejos. Usted es amado/a. Usted es deseado/a. Usted es una persona por quien Cristo murió. Y si le entrega su corazón esta noche, será hijo/hija de Dios.”
Three things to notice:
- Usted throughout — this is a moment of profound personal address to an individual. The respect of usted honors them.
- no está olvidado/a, no está demasiado lejos — these use estar (temporary state — Lesson 3), while es amado/a, es deseado/a, es una persona use ser (identity).
- será hijo/hija de Dios — future tense of ser (introduced here as a preview; covered fully in Level 2).
The ability to move between ser and estar in rapid alternation is a skill Lesson 4 develops. For now, note that the identity declarations (loved, wanted, a person for whom Christ died) all use ser, while the temporary states (not forgotten in the moment, not too far gone) use estar.
Scenario: Missionary Self-Introduction to a Congregation
The pastor invites the missionary to introduce herself to the congregation. She says:
“Good morning, everyone. My name is Sarah. I am from Nashville, Tennessee, in the United States. I am a missionary with an organization called World Mission. We are a team of five people, and we are here to serve you this week.”
Your interpretation:
“Buenos días a todos. Mi nombre es Sarah. Soy de Nashville, Tennessee, en los Estados Unidos. Soy misionera con una organización llamada World Mission. Somos un equipo de cinco personas y estamos aquí para servirles esta semana.”
Forms used: es (her name is), soy (I am from / I am a missionary), somos (we are a team).
Note: Estamos aquí — location of the team uses estar (Lesson 3). Even in this simple introduction, both ser and estar appear within three sentences.
Key Takeaways for This Lesson
Before moving to Lesson 3, you should be able to:
- Produce all five Latin American forms of ser in present tense (soy, eres, es, somos, son) in under 10 seconds — working toward under 5 seconds by end of week
- Identify the eight uses of ser and produce example sentences for each
- Deliver the theological declaration series (God is good, faithful, love, holy, just, merciful; we are saved, new creations, etc.) without hesitation
- Use ser correctly in a missionary self-introduction
- Recognize that professions after ser omit the indefinite article
Daily Practice
5-minute daily ser drill:
- Conjugation speed run — soy, eres, es, somos, son — three times, faster each time. (1 minute)
- Theological declarations — say five declarations using different forms. (2 minutes)
- One complete sentence per form — build a sentence around each of the five forms. (2 minutes)
Return to this drill every day for the rest of Unit 3. Even after moving to estar and the ser vs. estar distinction, the ser conjugation must remain fully automatic.
