Full Tense Reference: -AR Verbs
Before the drill, confirm all tense forms for predicar (to preach). This is the integration table:

Now apply the same six-row table to orar and enseñar mentally. Every form should be retrievable without effort.
The Six-Tense Oral Drill
Instructions: Take each verb through all six tenses in the first-person singular (yo) form only, then in third-person singular (él/ella), then in first-person plural (nosotros). Say each form aloud, followed by a ministry sentence.
This is not a speed drill — this is a fluency drill. Focus on natural production, not racing.
Predicar
Yo forms: predico — Predico el evangelio con valentía. prediqué — Ayer prediqué en la plaza por dos horas. predicaba — Antes, predicaba en las calles sin preparación. he predicado — Este mes, he predicado en cuatro iglesias. voy a predicar — Mañana voy a predicar sobre Juan 3. predicaré — Predicaré hasta que el Señor me llame.
Él/Ella forms: predica — El pastor predica con gran unción. predicó — Predicó en ese pueblo hace tres años. predicaba — Predicaba en las plazas cuando era joven. ha predicado — Ha predicado en diez países. va a predicar — Va a predicar esta noche en la catedral. predicará — Predicará el evangelio hasta su último aliento.
Nosotros forms: predicamos — Predicamos el evangelio a toda criatura. predicamos — Predicamos en esa comunidad el año pasado. predicábamos — Predicábamos juntos cada viernes. hemos predicado — Hemos predicado en toda la región este año. vamos a predicar — Vamos a predicar en la feria este sábado. predicaremos — Predicaremos hasta que Él venga.
Orar
Yo forms: oro — Oro por usted cada mañana. oré — Oré por tres horas esta mañana. oraba — Oraba cada día antes de que saliera el sol. he orado — He orado por esta ciudad durante cinco años. voy a orar — Ahora mismo voy a orar con usted. oraré — Oraré sin cesar hasta ver la respuesta.

The Interpretation Lab
This is the core exercise from the curriculum. The purpose: to interpret a complete ministry narrative from English to Spanish in consecutive style — the speaker pauses, you render the segment in Spanish.
How to run this drill:
- A partner (or a recorded audio source) speaks a ministry narrative in English, pausing every 1–3 sentences.
- You render each segment in Spanish, using -AR verb forms as the narrative requires.
- Your partner continues after your rendering.
- At the end, your partner gives feedback: were the verb tenses correct? Were the forms accurate? Did the meaning transfer?
Sample English narrative for the lab:
The missionary arrived in the village early in the morning. He had been traveling for three days. When he arrived, the people were already gathered in the plaza. They were singing and praying. He introduced himself and greeted everyone warmly. He preached about the grace of God for two hours. Three people were so moved that they came forward. He prayed for each one. Later, he taught the local leaders how to disciple new believers. He promised to return next month. The church agreed to pray for each other every day until he came back.
Target Spanish rendering:
El misionero llegó al pueblo temprano en la mañana. Había viajado por tres días. Cuando llegó, la gente ya estaba reunida en la plaza. Cantaban y oraban. Se presentó y saludó a todos con calidez. Predicó sobre la gracia de Dios por dos horas. Tres personas se conmovieron tanto que pasaron al frente. Oró por cada uno. Más tarde, enseñó a los líderes locales cómo discipular a los nuevos creyentes. Prometió regresar el próximo mes. La iglesia acordó orar la una por la otra cada día hasta que él regresara.
Record your rendering. Play it back. Evaluate:
- Did the tenses match the narrative? (Preterite for completed actions, imperfect for background and ongoing, present perfect for relevant-to-now events)
- Were the verb forms accurate?
- Was the meaning fully transferred?
- Where did you hesitate or lose the speaker?
The Missionary Application: 2-Minute Oral Testimony
This is the capstone assignment for Unit 5. Record a 2-minute oral testimony using -AR verbs across all tenses:

Requirements:
- At least 4 distinct preterite forms
- At least 3 distinct imperfect forms
- At least 2 present perfect forms
- At least 3 near future constructions
- At least 2 simple future forms
Have a native speaker evaluate it — or use a language exchange partner, a Spanish-speaking pastor, or a community member. Ask specifically: “Were the verb tenses correct?” and “Did anything sound unnatural?”
Unit 5 Completion Checklist
Before beginning Unit 6, verify that you can:
Present Tense:
- Conjugate any regular -AR verb in present tense (all 5 forms) under 8 seconds
- Produce the stem-changed forms of all 9 stem-changing -AR verbs
- Conjugate dar and estar without hesitation
- Negate any -AR verb instantly
- Form yes/no and information questions with -AR verbs
Past Tenses:
- Conjugate any regular -AR verb in preterite (all 5 forms)
- Know the 3 spelling changes in yo-preterite: c→qu, g→gu, z→c
- Know the preterite of dar: di, diste, dio, dimos, dieron
- Conjugate any -AR verb in imperfect (all 5 forms) — no irregulars
- Make the preterite/imperfect distinction in under 3 seconds per sentence
- Form present perfect with haber + -ado participle
- Know all 5 haber present forms: he, has, ha, hemos, han
Future Tenses:
- Know ir in all 5 present forms: voy, vas, va, vamos, van
- Produce near future with ir + a + infinitive for any verb
- Conjugate any -AR verb in simple future (all 5 forms) using infinitive + endings
- Distinguish near future (conversational, planned) from simple future (formal, promises, prophecy)
Integration:
- Take predicar, orar, and enseñar through all 6 tenses orally without notes
- Complete the interpretation lab recording
- Record the 2-minute testimony and receive native speaker evaluation
Daily Practice Going Forward
Unit 6 introduces -ER verbs. The paradigm is similar to -AR but with different endings. The vocabulary set will be different. The tense system is the same.
The maintenance commitment for Unit 5:
Do not let -AR verb automaticity decay while learning -ER verbs. Maintain your -AR verb drill rotation at reduced frequency:
- Three -AR verbs per day in any two tenses
- The ministry testimony (Missionary Application) as a weekly review exercise
The goal entering Level 3: every -AR verb form across all six tenses should be as automatic as a native speaker’s production. That level of automaticity is built in Level 2 and maintained through Level 3 and beyond.
