Level 2 — Elementary (CEFR: A2)

Unit 5 — Verb Group 1: -AR Verbs

Lesson 3 — Core -AR Verbs for Ministry Interpretation

Lesson Overview

Level: 2 — Elementary Unit: 5 — Verb Group 1: -AR Verbs Lesson: 3 of 14 Estimated Time: 75–90 minutes

What this lesson covers:

  • The 20 most important -AR verbs for ministry interpretation
  • Meanings, ministry contexts, and representative sentences for each verb
  • The listening drill: identifying -AR verbs in live prayer and devotional speech
  • Building the ministry vocabulary set systematically

Why a Targeted Vocabulary Set

A general Spanish vocabulary curriculum teaches the most common Spanish words. A missionary interpreter curriculum teaches the most common words in ministry speech — which is a substantially different list.

The interpreter who knows hablar (speak) but not proclamar (proclaim) or interceder (intercede) will struggle in the specific language register of preaching, prayer, and testimony. Ministry Spanish is a sub-language with its own high-frequency vocabulary. Mastering it specifically is far more efficient than general vocabulary accumulation.

The 20 verbs in this lesson account for a very high percentage of the -AR verb tokens the interpreter will encounter in sermons, prayers, and pastoral conversations. All 20 are regular -AR verbs — they follow the exact patterns from Lesson 2. Once their meanings are automatic, conjugating them in any tense is simply the application of those patterns.

The 20 Core Ministry -AR Verbs

Group 1 — Communication and Teaching

hablar — to speak

The most fundamental communication verb. Appears constantly.

El Señor habla a los que escuchan. — The Lord speaks to those who listen. ¿Hablas inglés? — Do you speak English? Hablamos en nombre de Cristo. — We speak in the name of Christ.

escuchar — to listen / to hear (attentively)

escuchar implies active, attentive listening — more than simply hearing.

Escucha la voz del Señor. — Listen to the voice of the Lord. La iglesia escucha la Palabra cada semana. — The church listens to the Word each week. ¿Escuchas lo que el Espíritu dice? — Do you hear what the Spirit is saying?

enseñar — to teach

El pastor enseña con sabiduría. — The pastor teaches with wisdom. Enseñamos a los nuevos creyentes los principios de la fe. — We teach new believers the principles of the faith.

predicar — to preach

La misión es predicar el evangelio a toda criatura. — The mission is to preach the gospel to every creature. ¿Quién predica esta noche? — Who is preaching tonight?

proclamar — to proclaim (formal register)

More formal and declarative than predicar. Appears in preaching about proclamation, in mission statements, and in worship.

Proclamamos a Cristo crucificado y resucitado. — We proclaim Christ crucified and risen. La iglesia proclama el año agradable del Señor. — The church proclaims the year of the Lord’s favor.

Group 2 — Prayer and Worship

orar — to pray

Ora sin cesar. — Pray without ceasing. Oramos por los enfermos esta noche. — We are praying for the sick tonight. ¿Puedo orar por usted? — May I pray for you?

adorar — to worship

Adoramos al Dios vivo y verdadero. — We worship the living and true God. La congregación adora en espíritu y en verdad. — The congregation worships in spirit and in truth.

alabar — to praise

Often appears in tandem with adorar. Praise is frequently expressed through song.

Alabamos al Señor por sus misericordias. — We praise the Lord for his mercies. ¡Alaben al Señor todos los pueblos! — Praise the Lord, all peoples!

confiar — to trust / to confide

Confiamos en Dios en tiempos difíciles. — We trust in God in difficult times. Confía en el Señor con todo tu corazón. — Trust in the Lord with all your heart.

Group 3 — Grace and Human Need

amar — to love

Dios ama al mundo de tal manera que dio a su Hijo. — God so loved the world that he gave his Son. Amamos porque él nos amó primero. — We love because he first loved us. Ama a tu prójimo como a ti mismo. — Love your neighbor as yourself.

perdonar — to forgive

Dios perdona todos tus pecados. — God forgives all your sins. Perdona como el Señor te perdonó. — Forgive as the Lord forgave you. ¿Puedes perdonar a los que te hicieron daño? — Can you forgive those who hurt you?

necesitar — to need

Necesitamos la gracia de Dios cada día. — We need the grace of God every day. ¿Qué necesitan para este ministerio? — What do they need for this ministry? El mundo necesita el evangelio. — The world needs the gospel.

ayudar — to help

El Señor ayuda a los que le invocan. — The Lord helps those who call on him. Estamos aquí para ayudar. — We are here to help. ¿En qué le puedo ayudar? — How can I help you?

Group 4 — Ministry Action

llegar — to arrive / to reach

Both physical arrival and the idea of reaching or getting through to someone.

Los misioneros llegan mañana. — The missionaries arrive tomorrow. El evangelio llega a los más necesitados. — The gospel reaches the most needy. ¿A qué hora llega el pastor? — What time does the pastor arrive?

trabajar — to work

Trabajamos juntos por el reino de Dios. — We work together for the kingdom of God. Dios trabaja en nosotros para hacer su voluntad. — God works in us to do his will.

invitar — to invite

Invitamos a todos a conocer a Cristo. — We invite everyone to know Christ. ¿A quién invitas a la iglesia? — Who do you invite to church?

bautizar — to baptize

El pastor bautiza a los nuevos creyentes. — The pastor baptizes new believers. Juan bautizaba en el río Jordán. — John was baptizing in the Jordan River.

llamar — to call / to name

Two distinct uses: a calling (God’s call to ministry) and naming.

Dios llama a los que elige. — God calls those he chooses. Me llamo [name]. — My name is [name]. (literally: I am called) ¿A qué te llama Dios? — What is God calling you to?

entregar — to surrender / to hand over / to deliver

One of the most theologically loaded -AR verbs. Surrendering to God, delivering a message, handing over a life.

Entregamos nuestras vidas al Señor. — We surrender our lives to the Lord. Dios entregó a su Hijo por nosotros. — God handed over his Son for us. Entrega tu carga al Señor. — Hand your burden over to the Lord.

compartir — to share

Compartimos el evangelio con nuestra comunidad. — We share the gospel with our community. ¿Quieres compartir tu testimonio? — Do you want to share your testimony? Compartimos lo que Dios nos da. — We share what God gives us.

The Listening Drill

This is the core exercise from the curriculum. Do it this week.

Step 1 — Find a short prayer or devotional in Spanish. Sources: YouTube devotional videos, Spanish-language worship service recordings, Christian podcast in Spanish. Choose something clearly spoken at a reasonable pace — 2–4 minutes long.

Step 2 — Listen once for overall comprehension. Get the general sense of what is being prayed or taught. Do not focus on verb forms yet.

Step 3 — Listen again, writing down every -AR verb you hear. Pause the recording if needed. Write the exact form you hear (not the infinitive). You may need multiple listens.

Step 4 — Identify each form. For each verb form you wrote:

  • What is the infinitive?
  • What person and number is this form?
  • What does it mean in this context?

Step 5 — Check against a transcript (if available). If a transcript or auto-caption is available, compare your list against it. Note any -AR verbs you missed.

What you’re building: The ability to identify -AR verb forms automatically in native-speed speech. This drill, repeated weekly, builds that recognition faster than any other method.

Practice Exercises

Exercise 1 — Meaning Recall

Without looking, give the English meaning of each verb. Then say a ministry sentence using it.

hablar, escuchar, enseñar, predicar, proclamar, orar, adorar, alabar, confiar, amar, perdonar, necesitar, ayudar, llegar, trabajar, invitar, bautizar, llamar, entregar, compartir

Exercise 2 — Verb Selection

Choose the most appropriate verb from the lesson for each ministry context:

  1. The pastor is addressing the congregation from the pulpit about the resurrection. (predicar or hablar?)
  2. The worship team is leading the congregation in song. (adorar or orar?)
  3. Someone is making a formal declaration of Christ’s resurrection. (hablar or proclamar?)
  4. A person is surrendering their life to God at the altar. (dar or entregar?)
  5. The church is extending an invitation to an evangelistic event. (invitar or llamar?)

Exercise 3 — Present Tense Production

Conjugate each verb below in the present tense (all five Latin American forms). Say each form aloud.

escuchar — proclamar — perdonar — entregar — compartir

Exercise 4 — Ministry Passage

Read this passage aloud and identify every -AR verb form. Name the infinitive and the person/number for each.

El misionero llega a la comunidad con un mensaje de esperanza. Habla con los líderes y explica la razón de su visita. Los líderes escuchan con atención. Juntos oran por la comunidad y proclaman que Dios ama a cada persona. Algunos invitan a sus vecinos. La iglesia local enseña a los nuevos creyentes. Todos comparten lo que tienen y trabajan juntos por el bien del pueblo.

Key Takeaways for This Lesson

Before moving to Lesson 4:

  • Know all 20 ministry -AR verbs with instant meaning recall
  • Recognize each verb in present tense forms embedded in ministry speech
  • Have completed the listening drill at least once
  • Know the theological nuance of the loaded verbs: proclamar (formal declaration), entregar (surrender/deliver), llamar (calling), confiar (trust/faith)

Daily Practice

Vocabulary acquisition:

Divide the 20 verbs into four groups of 5. Over the next four days, add each group to your daily conjugation drill. By the end of the week, you should be running all 20 in present tense from memory.

The goal is not just knowing what each verb means in isolation — it is instant recognition of any form of any verb in incoming speech. That takes repetition in context: hearing these verbs in real ministry speech (the listening drill) and producing them in sentences (the ministry sentence exercises).
