The 16 Core Ministry -ER Verbs
Several verbs on this list are irregular in the present tense. Their irregular forms are noted here; full treatment is in Lessons 3–5. For now, prioritize meaning acquisition and regular-form production; note irregularities as points to return to.
Group 1 — Faith and Understanding
creer — to believe
The central faith verb. Already fully drilled in Lesson 1.
Creo que Cristo resucitó. — I believe that Christ rose from the dead. ¿Crees en la vida eterna? — Do you believe in eternal life? Creemos en la Trinidad. — We believe in the Trinity.
leer — to read
Reading the Bible, reading from a text, reading aloud during a service.
Leo la Biblia cada mañana. — I read the Bible every morning. El pastor lee el texto antes de predicar. — The pastor reads the text before preaching. ¿Leen la Biblia en familia? — Do they read the Bible as a family?
comprender — to understand
Deeper understanding than just hearing. Implies comprehension and taking in meaning.
No siempre comprendemos el sufrimiento. — We don’t always understand suffering. El Espíritu Santo nos ayuda a comprender las Escrituras. — The Holy Spirit helps us understand the Scriptures.
aprender — to learn
Learning the Word, learning to pray, learning discipleship.
Aprendemos a orar escuchando la oración de otros. — We learn to pray by listening to the prayers of others. Los nuevos creyentes aprenden a caminar en la fe. — New believers learn to walk in the faith.
responder — to respond / to answer
Responding to God’s call, responding to the gospel, answering a question.
¿Cómo respondes a la gracia de Dios? — How do you respond to God’s grace? Respondemos al llamado del Señor con obediencia. — We respond to the Lord’s call with obedience.
Group 2 — Obedience and Knowledge
obedecer — to obey
Yo: obedezco (-zco form). Obedience is a core theme throughout Scripture and ministry.
Obedecemos a Dios antes que a los hombres. — We obey God rather than men. El que me ama, obedece mis mandamientos. — He who loves me obeys my commandments. ¿Obedeces la Palabra aunque sea difícil? — Do you obey the Word even when it’s difficult?
reconocer — to recognize / to acknowledge / to confess (something as true)
Yo: reconozco (-zco form). Powerful theological verb — confessing Christ, acknowledging sin.
Reconozco que soy pecador necesitado de gracia. — I acknowledge that I am a sinner in need of grace. La iglesia reconoce a Cristo como Señor. — The church acknowledges Christ as Lord. ¿Reconoces la obra de Dios en tu vida? — Do you recognize God’s work in your life?
establecer — to establish / to found / to set in place
Yo: establezco (-zco form). Used for establishing churches, ministries, doctrine, and God’s kingdom.
Dios establece su reino sobre toda la tierra. — God establishes his kingdom over all the earth. Establecemos iglesias en comunidades sin testimonio cristiano. — We establish churches in communities without a Christian witness.
proteger — to protect
God’s protection, the church’s protective role, protection in mission.
Yo: protejo (g→j before o — covered in Lesson 4). Other forms regular: proteges, protege, protegemos, protegen.
Dios protege a los que le temen. — God protects those who fear him. El Señor protege a los suyos. — The Lord protects his own.
Group 3 — Key Irregular -ER Verbs (introduced; detailed in Lessons 3–5)
ver — to see
Yo: veo (not vo). One of the most common verbs in the language.
Veo la obra de Dios en todo lo que me rodea. — I see God’s work in everything around me. ¿Ves cómo Dios está obrando? — Do you see how God is working? Vemos con los ojos de la fe. — We see with the eyes of faith.
hacer — to do / to make
Yo: hago (irregular). Among the most fundamental verbs in Spanish. Appears in declarations of what God does, what the church does, what Christ has done.
Dios hace todas las cosas nuevas. — God makes all things new. ¿Qué haces para el reino de Dios? — What do you do for the kingdom of God? Hacemos lo que podemos con lo que tenemos. — We do what we can with what we have.
tener — to have
Yo: tengo (irregular). Beyond physical possession — used for abstract having (faith, hope, fear, time).
Tengo fe en las promesas de Dios. — I have faith in the promises of God. ¿Tienes paz esta noche? — Do you have peace tonight? Tenemos un Sumo Sacerdote que comprende nuestra debilidad. — We have a High Priest who understands our weakness.
saber — to know (facts, information, how to do something)
Yo: sé (irregular — single letter with accent to distinguish from reflexive se). Covers knowing facts and knowing how to do things.
Sé que mi Redentor vive. — I know that my Redeemer lives. ¿Sabes orar en español? — Do you know how to pray in Spanish? No sabemos la hora, pero sabemos que Él viene. — We don’t know the hour, but we know he is coming.
poder — to be able to / can
Stem-changing: puedo (yo). Covers ability, possibility, and permission.
No puedo hacer nada sin Cristo. — I can do nothing without Christ. ¿Puedes orar por mí? — Can you pray for me? Podemos hacer todo en Cristo que nos fortalece. — We can do all things through Christ who strengthens us.
querer — to want / to love (people, in some contexts)
Stem-changing: quiero (yo). Used for both desire and love in personal contexts.
Quiero conocer más profundamente la Palabra de Dios. — I want to know God’s Word more deeply. ¿Quieres recibir a Cristo en tu corazón? — Do you want to receive Christ in your heart? Queremos servir a esta comunidad con todo nuestro corazón. — We want to serve this community with all our heart.
deber — must / should / ought to
Regular. Expresses obligation, moral duty, and spiritual responsibility.
Debemos obedecer a Dios antes que a los hombres. — We must obey God rather than men. ¿Qué debo hacer para ser salvo? — What must I do to be saved? (The Philippian jailer’s question — Acts 16:30) El siervo de Dios debe ser irreprensible. — The servant of God must be blameless.
High-Frequency Summary
In descending frequency of ministry use:
- tener — to have (appears in almost every sentence)
- poder — can/be able to (ability and possibility)
- querer — to want (desire, invitation, love)
- hacer — to do/make (action and creation)
- saber — to know (knowledge and ability)
- ver — to see (perception and spiritual sight)
- creer — to believe (faith declarations)
- deber — must/should (obligation)
- obedecer — to obey (discipleship)
- leer — to read (Scripture engagement)
The top five (tener, poder, querer, hacer, saber) are all irregular in important ways. Lessons 3–5 drill them intensively. At this point, know their meanings and recognize them in speech.

Exercise 1 — Meaning Recall
Without looking, give the English meaning of each verb. Then say one ministry sentence using it.

Exercise 2 — Verb Selection in Context
Choose the best verb from the lesson for each blank:
- ¿__ (you) la Biblia cada mañana?_ → lees

Exercise 3 — -zco Yo Form Integration
Produce a ministry sentence for each -zco verb:
obedezco — reconozco — establezco — conozco
Exercise 4 — Ministry Conversation
Role-play a pastoral conversation where the missionary asks questions using -ER verbs, and the congregation member answers. The interpreter handles both directions.
Missionary: “Do you believe in Jesus Christ?” Congregation member: “Yes, I believe. I want to receive him.” Missionary: “Do you understand the commitment you’re making?” Member: “I understand. I know I need God.”
Produce both the Spanish and English for each line.
