Review: The Boot Pattern
From Unit 5 Lesson 5: stem-changing verbs change the vowel in the stem for four forms — yo, tú, él, ellos — but not for nosotros (outside the boot). The same pattern applies to -ER verbs.
The same two patterns that appeared in -AR verbs appear in -ER verbs: e→ie and o→ue. -ER verbs have no u→ue stem change.
Pattern 1: e → ie
querer (to want / to love)

Quiero conocer más profundamente a Cristo. — I want to know Christ more deeply. ¿Quieres entregar tu vida al Señor esta noche? — Do you want to give your life to the Lord tonight? Dios quiere que todos sean salvos. — God wants all to be saved. Queremos servir a esta comunidad. — We want to serve this community. Los perdidos quieren algo más — aunque no saben qué. — The lost want something more — even if they don’t know what.
The invitation: ¿Quieres recibir a Cristo? — Do you want to receive Christ? — This is one of the most important invitation sentences in evangelical ministry. The quieres form (stem-changed tú form) must be completely automatic.
entender (to understand)

No entiendo todo, pero confío en Dios. — I don’t understand everything, but I trust God. ¿Entiendes lo que significa la gracia? — Do you understand what grace means? El Espíritu nos ayuda a entender la Palabra. — The Spirit helps us understand the Word. Entendemos que Dios tiene un propósito. — We understand that God has a purpose.
entender vs. comprender: Both mean “to understand.” Comprender is slightly more formal and implies fuller, deeper comprehension. Entender is more common in everyday conversation. Both appear frequently in ministry — the interpreter needs both.
defender (to defend)

Defiendo el evangelio con amor y verdad. — I defend the gospel with love and truth. La iglesia defiende a los más vulnerables. — The church defends the most vulnerable. Siempre estamos dispuestos a defender la esperanza que tenemos. — We are always ready to defend the hope we have.
Pattern 2: o → ue

No puedo hacer nada sin Cristo. — I can do nothing without Christ. ¿Puedes quedarte después del servicio? — Can you stay after the service? Dios puede hacer mucho más de lo que pedimos. — God can do far more than we ask. Podemos hacer todo en Cristo que nos fortalece. — We can do all things through Christ who strengthens us. ¿Pueden los misioneros quedarse una semana más? — Can the missionaries stay one more week?
The modal use: Poder is a modal verb — it modifies another verb’s meaning. ¿Puedo orar? — May I pray? ¿Puede repetir eso? — Can you repeat that? The modal use is as important as the standalone use for interpreters.
volver (to return / to come back)

Vuelvo a esta comunidad cada año. — I return to this community every year. Cristo vuelve — esa es nuestra esperanza. — Christ is coming back — that is our hope. ¿Cuándo vuelve el equipo misionero? — When does the mission team return? Volvemos a la Biblia para encontrar respuestas. — We return to the Bible to find answers.
volver a + infinitive: This construction means “to do something again”: Vuelvo a predicar aquí con gusto. — I gladly preach here again. ¿Vuelves a leer ese versículo? — Are you reading that verse again?
Contrast Drill: Boot Forms vs. Nosotros
The nosotros form retains the original stem. The contrast must be automatic:

Read each pair aloud: queremos / quiere — entendemos / entiende — defendemos / defiende — podemos / puede — volvemos / vuelve
The vowel shift is audible in incoming speech. The interpreter must recognize both the changed and unchanged forms as belonging to the same verb.

Exercise 1 — Full Conjugation Production
Conjugate each verb in all 5 Latin American present tense forms:
querer — entender — poder — volver — defender
Exercise 2 — Ministry Sentence Production
For each verb, produce one sentence using a boot form (stem-changed) and one using nosotros (unchanged):
poder: Puedo / Podemos querer: Quiero / Queremos entender: Entiende / Entendemos volver: Vuelves / Volvemos
Exercise 3 — Invitation Drill
The following sentences are key invitation and gospel phrases that use stem-changed forms. Memorize all five:
- ¿Quieres recibir a Cristo?
- ¿Puedes creer en Él?
- ¿Entiendes lo que significa creer?
- Dios quiere que seas salvo.
- Puedes comenzar de nuevo con Cristo.
Deliver all five from memory, then reverse: give the English to a partner, who produces the Spanish.
Exercise 4 — Recognition in Context
A partner reads the following passage aloud at normal speed. You identify every stem-changing verb and call out its infinitive:
El misionero quiere llegar al corazón de la gente. Entiende que la gracia es el mensaje central. Él puede predicar con poder porque depende del Espíritu. La congregación quiere escuchar. Muchos no entienden la doctrina de la gracia todavía. Pero Dios puede cambiar todo eso. Nosotros volvemos cada mes porque queremos ver el avivamiento.

Add the five stem-changing -ER verbs to your conjugation drill. Specifically drill the contrast: quiere / queremos, puede / podemos. This contrast — stem change in singular, no change in nosotros — is the most error-prone feature of stem-changing verbs.
