The Irregular Preterite Group
These verbs do not use the standard -AR or -ER/-IR preterite endings. Instead, they use a completely different stem and a shared set of unstressed endings (no accent marks on any form).
The shared endings for all irregular preterites:

Note: no accent marks on yo (-e) or él (-o) forms — unlike regular preterites where these carry accent marks. This distinguishes irregular preterites from regular ones.
The Eight Irregular Preterites
ser / ir — to be / to go
Both ser and ir are identical in the preterite. Context determines which verb is meant.

Fui misionero en México por cinco años. — I was a missionary in Mexico for five years. (ser) Fui a la iglesia el domingo pasado. — I went to church last Sunday. (ir) El servicio fue muy poderoso. — The service was very powerful. (ser) Los misioneros fueron a la comunidad. — The missionaries went to the community. (ir) Fuimos los primeros en llevar el evangelio a ese pueblo. — We were the first to bring the gospel to that village. (ser)
Distinguishing ser vs. ir in context: fue preceded by a predicate noun or adjective = ser: Fue un milagro. (It was a miracle.) fue with a destination or motion = ir: Fue a la reunión. (He went to the meeting.)
tener — to have

Tuve una visión de la comunidad que íbamos a alcanzar. — I had a vision of the community we were going to reach. El pastor tuvo que hablar con el anciano. — The pastor had to speak with the elder. Tuvimos una reunión muy difícil. — We had a very difficult meeting. Los discípulos tuvieron miedo cuando vieron a Cristo caminando sobre el agua. — The disciples were afraid when they saw Christ walking on the water.
hacer — to do / to make
Preterite stem: hic- (note: hizo in the él form, not hició — the c changes to z before o to preserve the soft s sound)

¿Qué hizo Dios en ese servicio? — What did God do in that service? Hice lo que pude con lo que tenía. — I did what I could with what I had. Hicimos discípulos en doce comunidades. — We made disciples in twelve communities. Cristo hizo los ciegos ver y los sordos oír. — Christ made the blind see and the deaf hear. ¿Qué hicieron los apóstoles después de Pentecostés? — What did the apostles do after Pentecost?
The critical hizo form: Dios hizo… begins countless declarations in preaching. Dios hizo al hombre a su imagen. Dios hizo todo bueno. Lo que hizo Cristo en la cruz… This form must be automatic.
poder — to be able to / could
Preterite stem: pud-

No pude terminar el sermón sin llorar. — I couldn’t finish the sermon without crying. Por fin pudimos entrar al pueblo. — Finally we were able to enter the village. No pudieron resistir la sabiduría con la que Pablo hablaba. — They could not resist the wisdom with which Paul spoke. Pudo llegar a tiempo a pesar de todo. — He was able to arrive on time in spite of everything.
saber — to know / to find out
Preterite stem: sup-

The preterite of saber has a nuance shift: In the preterite, saber often means “to find out” or “to learn for the first time” — not just “to know.”
Supe la noticia ayer. — I found out the news yesterday. El pastor supo de la necesidad y respondió de inmediato. — The pastor found out about the need and responded immediately. Cuando supo que Cristo había resucitado, su vida cambió. — When she found out that Christ had risen, her life changed.
querer — to want / to try (in preterite)

Nuance shift in preterite: querer in the preterite often means “tried to” (and may or may not have succeeded) rather than simply “wanted.”
Quisimos visitar esa comunidad pero no pudimos llegar. — We tried to visit that community but couldn’t get there. Quiso hablar con el pastor pero él ya se había ido. — He tried to speak with the pastor but he had already left. No quisieron escuchar. — They refused to listen. (tried not to / wouldn’t)
ver — to see
Preterite stem: v- (very short)

Note: No accent marks on vi or vio (monosyllables with diphthongs do not require accent marks under modern Spanish orthography).
Vi a Dios obrar de maneras que nunca había imaginado. — I saw God work in ways I had never imagined. Viste cómo el Señor abrió esa puerta. — You saw how the Lord opened that door. Los discípulos vieron al Señor resucitado. — The disciples saw the risen Lord. Vimos milagros en esa reunión. — We saw miracles in that meeting.
Biblical key phrase: Y los que lo vieron, dieron testimonio. — And those who saw it gave testimony. This structure — ver in the preterite as the foundation for witness — is fundamental to the gospel narrative.
poner — to put / to place

Puse mis manos sobre él y oré. — I placed my hands on him and prayed. Dios puso en mi corazón el amor por este pueblo. — God placed in my heart a love for this people. Pusimos los fundamentos del ministerio en esa ciudad. — We laid the foundations of ministry in that city. Los apóstoles pusieron sus manos sobre los diáconos. — The apostles laid their hands on the deacons.

The Recognition Drill
From the curriculum: listen to a narrative in Spanish. Every time you hear an irregular preterite, immediately identify the infinitive form. This trains the listening-to-meaning pipeline.
What to listen for: The irregular stems — fue, tuv, hic/hiz, pud, sup, quis, vi/vio, pus — do not sound like the infinitives at all. Recognizing them requires exposure to the irregular forms until they are familiar as units, not as derivations from the infinitive.
Practice text (read aloud or have partner read):
El misionero fue a la comunidad muy temprano. No pudo dormir bien la noche anterior porque tuvo un sueño sobre ese lugar. Cuando llegó, vio a muchas personas reunidas. Hizo una oración en voz alta y luego habló. Muchos no quisieron escuchar al principio. Pero al final, varios pusieron su fe en Cristo. El misionero supo ese día que Dios había estado preparando a esa gente. Fue uno de los días más significativos de su ministerio.

Exercise 1 — All Eight: Yo Forms
Without looking, produce the yo preterite form of all eight irregular verbs:
ser/ir, tener, hacer, poder, saber, querer, ver, poner
Answers: fui, tuve, hice, pude, supe, quise, vi, puse
Exercise 2 — Ministry Narrative Production
Create a 90-second oral narrative about a ministry event that uses at least 6 of the 8 irregular preterites. Tell it aloud without notes.

Complete the recognition drill above with the practice text. Mark every irregular preterite and identify its infinitive.
Exercise 4 — Nuance Awareness
For saber and querer, produce one sentence each demonstrating the preterite nuance shift:
- saber preterite = “found out”
- querer preterite = “tried to” (positive) or “refused to” (negative)

The stems are the bottleneck. Once the stems are automatic, the endings (-e, -iste, -o, -imos, -ieron) apply uniformly.
