The -IR Preterite Endings

The critical observation: These endings are identical to the -ER preterite endings. There is no distinction between -ER and -IR in the preterite. Once the -ER preterite is internalized, the -IR preterite is free.

The only difference is the verb-specific form. Creer has the y spelling change (creyó, creyeron) because of its vowel stem; vivir with a consonant stem (viv-) does not.
One Spelling Note: nosotros
The nosotros preterite of -IR verbs (vivimos) is identical in spelling to the nosotros present (vivimos). Context determines meaning:
Vivimos para Cristo. — We live for Christ. (present) Vivimos en esa comunidad por dos años. — We lived in that community for two years. (preterite)
In speech and interpretation, context — especially time expressions — disambiguates. Por dos años, el año pasado, en 2020 signal the preterite. Siempre, hoy, cada día signal the present.
Ministry Sentences: Regular -IR Preterite
vivir: Viví en México por cinco años como misionero. — I lived in Mexico for five years as a missionary. Vivió para Cristo hasta su último aliento. — He lived for Christ until his last breath. ¿Dónde viviste antes de venir a esta comunidad? — Where did you live before coming to this community? Vivimos el evangelio delante de ellos, no solo lo predicamos. — We lived the gospel before them, we didn’t just preach it.
recibir: Recibí a Cristo como mi Señor y Salvador. — I received Christ as my Lord and Savior. Recibieron la Palabra con alegría. — They received the Word with joy. ¿Cuándo recibiste el bautismo del Espíritu? — When did you receive the baptism of the Spirit? La iglesia recibió muchas ofrendas para el proyecto misionero. — The church received many offerings for the mission project.
escribir: Pablo escribió estas palabras desde la cárcel. — Paul wrote these words from prison. Escribí mi testimonio para compartirlo con mi familia. — I wrote my testimony to share it with my family. ¿Quién escribió el libro de Apocalipsis? — Who wrote the book of Revelation?
compartir: Compartí el evangelio con mi vecino y escuchó con interés. — I shared the gospel with my neighbor and he listened with interest. Compartieron sus recursos con los hermanos necesitados. — They shared their resources with the needy brothers. El apóstol compartió todo lo que tenía con la iglesia. — The apostle shared everything he had with the church.
sufrir: Sufrió persecución por predicar el nombre de Jesús. — He suffered persecution for preaching the name of Jesus. Sufrimos juntos, pero Dios nos sostuvo. — We suffered together, but God sustained us. Muchos misioneros sufrieron en silencio durante años. — Many missionaries suffered in silence for years.
decidir: Decidí seguir a Cristo esa noche. — I decided to follow Christ that night. La iglesia decidió plantar una congregación en ese barrio. — The church decided to plant a congregation in that neighborhood. Decidieron sacrificar su comodidad para servir en el campo. — They decided to sacrifice their comfort to serve in the field.
cumplir: Dios cumplió su promesa a Abraham. — God fulfilled his promise to Abraham. Cumplió los requisitos del ministerio con excelencia. — He fulfilled the ministry requirements with excellence. Cumplimos la misión que Dios nos encargó. — We fulfilled the mission God entrusted to us.
construir: Construyeron una iglesia en seis meses. — They built a church in six months. Construimos relaciones de confianza con la comunidad. — We built trust relationships with the community.
Note: construir in the preterite has a spelling change in él and ellos forms: construyó, construyeron (the i becomes y between vowels — same as creer → creyó).
elegir: La iglesia eligió a tres nuevos diáconos. — The church chose three new deacons. Dios nos eligió antes de la fundación del mundo. — God chose us before the foundation of the world.
Preterite vs. Present in Context
Practice distinguishing these pairs:
Recibo la gracia de Dios. (present — ongoing) Recibí a Cristo hace diez años. (preterite — specific moment)
Compartimos el evangelio. (present — regular activity) Compartimos el evangelio en esa aldea el año pasado. (preterite — completed past event; nosotros form is identical — context clarifies)
Sufrimos por Cristo. (present — ongoing willingness) Sufrimos mucho en esa misión, pero valió la pena. (preterite — completed experience)

Exercise 1 — Preterite Paradigm Production
Without notes, produce all five forms of each verb in the preterite:
vivir, recibir, compartir, decidir, sufrir

Exercise 2 — Testimony Production
Produce a 6–8 sentence personal testimony segment using the preterite tense with at least five different regular -IR verbs. Include yo, él/ella, and nosotros forms.
Exercise 3 — Present vs. Preterite Recognition
A partner reads sentences from a mixed passage. You call out whether each -IR verb is present or preterite, and give the English meaning:
Vivimos para Cristo. → present: “We live for Christ.” Decidió seguir a Jesús. → preterite: “He decided to follow Jesus.” Recibimos el Espíritu Santo. → present: “We receive the Holy Spirit.” (context-dependent — note it could be preterite too) Sufrieron mucho en el campo. → preterite: “They suffered much in the field.” Comparto mi testimonio aquí. → present: “I share my testimony here.” ¿Cuándo recibiste a Cristo? → preterite: “When did you receive Christ?”
Exercise 4 — Biblical Narrative
Produce a 5–8 sentence summary of a biblical story using -IR verbs in the preterite. Options: Paul’s missionary journeys, the conversion of the jailer at Philippi, the disciples receiving the Holy Spirit.
