Level 2 — Elementary (CEFR: A2)

Unit 7 — Verb Group 3: -IR Verbs

Lesson 7 — Stem Changes in the -IR Preterite

Lesson Overview

Level: 2 — Elementary Unit: 7 — Verb Group 3: -IR Verbs Lesson: 7 of 14 Estimated Time: 60–75 minutes

What this lesson covers:

  • A feature unique to -IR verbs: stem changes in the preterite third persons only
  • The rule: él/ella and ellos/ellas only — not yo, tú, nosotros
  • Which verbs are affected and what the change is
  • Key verbs: pedir, servir, dormir, morir, decir, sentir, seguir
  • Ministry sentences with third-person stem changes
  • Listening drill: identifying stem-changed third-person forms in narrative

The Unique -IR Rule: Stem Changes in Third Persons Only

In the present tense, stem-changing -IR verbs change in the boot forms (all except nosotros). In the preterite, the rule is different and more limited:

Only the él/ella and ellos/ellas forms have stem changes. All other preterite forms are regular.

This is a feature exclusive to -IR verbs. -AR and -ER verbs never have stem changes in the preterite.

The change itself is reduced:

  • Verbs with e→ie or e→i present stem change → use e→i in the preterite third persons
  • Verbs with o→ue present stem change → use o→u in the preterite third persons

The Key Verbs and Their Third-Person Preterite Forms

Note on decir: it has an irregular stem in the preterite (dij-) covered more fully in Lesson 8. The third-person forms follow the e→i pattern on top of that irregular stem.

Why This Matters for Interpretation

In narrative and testimony, third-person preterite forms are extremely common — stories are about what he, she, they did. The stem-changed forms (pidió, sirvió, siguió, murió) are the forms you will hear and need to produce most often.

The interpreter who does not know these forms will hear siguió and struggle to identify it as preterite of seguir. With the rule internalized, siguió (e→i, preterite él) → “he followed” is immediate.

Ministry Sentences: Third-Person Stem Changes

pedir

Jesús pidió al Padre que nos guardara como uno. — Jesus asked the Father to keep us as one. Los discípulos pidieron que el Señor les enseñara a orar. — The disciples asked the Lord to teach them to pray. Pidió oración por su familia enferma. — She asked for prayer for her sick family. Pidieron con fe y Dios respondió. — They asked with faith and God answered.

servir

Sirvió a su comunidad durante cuarenta años sin buscar reconocimiento. — He served his community for forty years without seeking recognition. Los diáconos sirvieron las mesas con dignidad. — The deacons served at the tables with dignity. Sirvió al Señor hasta su último día. — She served the Lord until her last day. Sirvieron en tres países antes de establecerse aquí. — They served in three countries before settling here.

dormir

morir

Cristo murió por nuestros pecados. — Christ died for our sins. Murió como mártir, sin negar el nombre de Jesús. — He died as a martyr, without denying the name of Jesus. Muchos de los primeros cristianos murieron por su fe. — Many of the first Christians died for their faith. El grano de trigo murió, y llevó mucho fruto. — The grain of wheat died and bore much fruit.

sentir

Sintió la presencia de Dios cuando adoraba. — She felt God’s presence when she worshiped. Los creyentes sintieron el peso de la gloria de Dios en esa reunión. — The believers felt the weight of God’s glory in that gathering.

seguir

Pedro siguió a Jesús desde lejos después de su arresto. — Peter followed Jesus from a distance after his arrest. Siguieron al Señor aunque el camino era estrecho. — They followed the Lord even though the path was narrow. Siguió predicando aunque la congregación era pequeña. — He kept preaching even though the congregation was small.

Listening Drill

From the curriculum: hear a third-person narrative using -IR verbs. For every él or ellos verb, identify whether it has a stem change and name the original stem.

Sample passage for the drill:

El misionero llegó a la aldea y pidió hospedaje. Sirvió a la comunidad por una semana entera. Un anciano murió durante esa visita, y el misionero predicó en el funeral. Muchos sintieron que Dios hablaba directamente a sus corazones. Algunos siguieron al misionero para escuchar más. Al final, varios pidieron oración.

Analysis:

  • pidió → preterite él of pedir, stem change e→i ✓
  • Sirvió → preterite él of servir, stem change e→i ✓
  • murió → preterite él of morir, stem change o→u ✓
  • Sintieron → preterite ellos of sentir, stem change e→i ✓
  • Siguieron → preterite ellos of seguir, stem change e→i ✓
  • pidieron → preterite ellos of pedir, stem change e→i ✓

Practice Exercises

Exercise 1 — Paradigm Production

Without notes, produce all five preterite forms of each verb, naming which forms have stem changes:

pedir, servir, dormir, morir, sentir, seguir

Exercise 2 — Pattern Identification

A partner reads a conjugated preterite form. You identify: (a) the infinitive, (b) whether there is a stem change, (c) the subject:

sirvióservir, e→i stem change, él/ella pedimospedir, no stem change, nosotros (regular) murieronmorir, o→u stem change, ellos sentísentir, no stem change (yo form is regular), yo siguióseguir, e→i stem change, él/ella dormistedormir, no stem change (tú form is regular), tú

Exercise 3 — Ministry Narrative

Produce an 8–10 sentence missionary story in the preterite. Use at least four of the stem-changing verbs from this lesson in the third person. The story should describe a mission trip or ministry encounter.

Exercise 4 — Biblical Events

Produce 5 sentences about biblical events using the stem-changed third-person preterite:

  1. Jesus asking something → Jesús pidió…
  2. A person serving → sirvió…
  3. Someone dying for faith → murió…
  4. Believers feeling something → sintieron…
  5. Disciples following → siguieron…

Key Takeaways for This Lesson

Before moving to Lesson 8:

  • -IR stem changes in the preterite: él/ella and ellos only — all other forms are regular
  • e→i or e→ie verbs → e→i in the preterite third persons (pidió, sirvió, sintió, siguió)
  • o→ue verbs → o→u in the preterite third persons (durmió, murió)
  • This is the feature that most distinguishes -IR verbs from -ER verbs in the preterite
  • These third-person forms are the highest-frequency forms in narrative

Daily Practice

The six key third-person preterite forms as a daily sequence:

pidió — sirvió — durmió — murió — sintió — siguió

One sentence each, daily, in a ministry or biblical context. These six forms are the core of -IR preterite irregularity. When they are automatic, all stem-changing -IR preterite forms will be in reach.
