Level 2 — Elementary (CEFR: A2)

Unit 7 — Verb Group 3: -IR Verbs

Lesson 9 — Imperfect of -IR Verbs

Lesson Overview

Level: 2 — Elementary Unit: 7 — Verb Group 3: -IR Verbs Lesson: 9 of 14 Estimated Time: 45–60 minutes

What this lesson covers:

  • -IR imperfect endings: identical to -ER imperfect endings
  • Model conjugation of vivir in the imperfect
  • The one imperfect irregular: ir (iba)
  • Ministry sentences for habitual and background -IR actions in the imperfect
  • Comparison with -ER imperfect to confirm the identical pattern

The -IR Imperfect Endings

PronounEndingvivir (to live)
yo-íavivía
-íasvivías
él/ella/usted-íavivía
nosotros-íamosvivíamos
ellos/ustedes-íanvivían

These endings are identical to the -ER imperfect endings. There is no distinction between -ER and -IR in the imperfect:

Pronoun-ER: creer-IR: vivir
yocreíavivía
creíasvivías
élcreíavivía
nosotroscreíamosvivíamos
elloscreíanvivían

The interpreter already has this pattern from Unit 6. The only new element in Unit 7 is the -IR verb vocabulary.

The One Irregular Imperfect: Ir

The verb ir is irregular in the imperfect:

PronounForm
yoiba
ibas
él/ella/ustediba
nosotrosíbamos
ellos/ustedesiban

This is one of only three Spanish imperfect irregulars (along with ser: era and ver: veía, both covered in Unit 6). The form iba must be recognized immediately in speech — it appears constantly in narrative.

Ministry sentences — ir (imperfect):

Iba a la iglesia cada domingo desde niño. — He used to go to church every Sunday since childhood. Íbamos de misión cada verano por diez años. — We used to go on mission every summer for ten years. Iban de casa en casa predicando las buenas nuevas. — They used to go from house to house preaching the good news. Iba al templo a orar dos veces al día. — She used to go to the temple to pray twice a day.

Regular -IR Verbs in the Imperfect

The imperfect of regular -IR verbs follows the -ía ending set without exception. No stem-changing -IR verb has a stem change in the imperfect — all imperfect forms use the original stem.

vivir: Vivíamos en una aldea pequeña cuando éramos misioneros. — We used to live in a small village when we were missionaries. Vivía para el trabajo, no para Dios — hasta que todo cambió. — He used to live for work, not for God — until everything changed. ¿Dónde vivías antes de convertirte? — Where did you used to live before you converted?

servir: Servía a la comunidad desde que tenía dieciséis años. — She used to serve the community since she was sixteen. Servíamos en el comedor comunitario cada sábado. — We used to serve at the community dining hall every Saturday. Servían al Señor aunque nadie los reconocía. — They used to serve the Lord even though no one recognized them.

pedir: Pedía la misma cosa por años hasta que vio la respuesta. — He used to ask for the same thing for years until he saw the answer. Pedíamos juntos cada mañana — era nuestro ritmo diario. — We used to pray together each morning — it was our daily rhythm. Siempre pedían sabiduría para los líderes de la iglesia. — They always used to ask for wisdom for the church leaders.

compartir: Compartía su fe con cualquiera que quisiera escuchar. — She used to share her faith with anyone who wanted to listen. Compartíamos los recursos como la iglesia primitiva. — We used to share resources like the early church.

recibir: Recibía a los visitantes con genuina hospitalidad. — He used to receive visitors with genuine hospitality. La comunidad recibía a los misioneros como ángeles. — The community used to receive the missionaries as angels.

sentir: Sentía la presencia de Dios cada vez que adoraba. — She used to feel God’s presence every time she worshiped. Sentíamos que Dios estaba preparando algo grande. — We used to feel that God was preparing something great.

seguir: Seguía a su mentor espiritual a dondequiera que fuera. — He used to follow his spiritual mentor wherever he went. Seguíamos las instrucciones del apóstol al pie de la letra. — We used to follow the apostle’s instructions to the letter.

sufrir: Sufría en silencio pero nunca perdió la fe. — She suffered in silence but never lost faith. Sufrían persecución pero seguían predicando. — They used to suffer persecution but kept preaching.

Imperfect for Background Descriptions

The imperfect is the tense of background, habit, and ongoing past state. For the interpreter, this means recognizing it in the context of narrative: the imperfect sets the scene, the preterite delivers the events.

Background/habit sentences with -IR verbs:

Vivía en una comunidad cerrada cuando oyó el evangelio por primera vez. — She was living in a closed community when she heard the gospel for the first time. Servía fielmente cuando la oportunidad llegó. — He was serving faithfully when the opportunity came. Pedían oración cada semana cuando el milagro ocurrió. — They were asking for prayer every week when the miracle happened. Iban al mercado cada lunes cuando se encontraron con el misionero. — They used to go to the market every Monday when they met the missionary.

Key Takeaways for This Lesson

Before moving to Lesson 10:

  • -IR imperfect endings: -ía, -ías, -ía, -íamos, -ían — identical to -ER endings
  • No stem-changing -IR verb has a stem change in the imperfect
  • Only one -IR imperfect irregular: ir → iba, ibas, iba, íbamos, iban
  • The imperfect of -IR verbs signals habit, ongoing background, and past states — the same uses as for all other verbs

Daily Practice

Three imperfect sentences about your own life before faith, or about a biblical figure’s regular habits:

Antes, vivía para… / Iba… / Pedía… / Servía… / Sentía…

One daily sentence using iba specifically — since it is the one irregular imperfect and must become automatic.
