The Consecutive Interpretation Sequence

At Level 2, the target mode is consecutive interpretation: the speaker delivers a sentence or short passage, then pauses, and the interpreter renders it in English. This is distinct from simultaneous interpretation (where both happen at once) and whispered interpretation (a modified simultaneous).

The consecutive sequence:

  1. Receive — listen to the Spanish, hold it in working memory
  2. Identify — tense, verb group, meaning — all within the memory window
  3. Produce — deliver the English equivalent before the next Spanish sentence begins

At this stage, the interpreter should be working sentence by sentence, not phrase by phrase and not paragraph by paragraph. One Spanish sentence → one English rendering → move on.

The tense question in production: The interpreter must not only convey the meaning but the tense relationship. Creyó is not just “he believed” — it is a specific completed event. Creía is “he was believing / he used to believe” — ongoing or habitual. Ha creído is “he has believed” — past with present relevance. Each carries a different theological and narrative weight, and a faithful interpretation preserves the speaker’s tense choice.


Passage 1 — Testimony (All Tenses, Moderate Complexity)

Deliver sentence by sentence. Partner pauses after each period.

Nací en una familia religiosa, pero nunca conocí al Dios vivo. Íbamos a la iglesia cada domingo, pero yo no entendía el evangelio. Cuando tenía dieciocho años, llegué a una crisis de fe. Un compañero de trabajo me habló de la gracia de Dios. Escuché con atención y sentí que algo se movía en mi corazón. Pedí perdón esa noche y recibí a Cristo como mi Salvador. Desde entonces, he vivido de una manera completamente diferente. He servido en esta comunidad por diez años. He visto cosas que no puedo explicar excepto como obra de Dios. English target:

I was born into a religious family, but I never knew the living God. We used to go to church every Sunday, but I didn’t understand the gospel. When I was eighteen years old, I came to a faith crisis. A coworker spoke to me about God’s grace. I listened carefully and felt that something was moving in my heart. I asked for forgiveness that night and received Christ as my Savior. Since then, I have lived in a completely different way. I have served in this community for ten years. I have seen things I cannot explain except as God’s work. I am going to keep serving Him as long as I have breath. I know that God will fulfill what He began in me.

Tense tracking: Present, imperfect, preterite, preterite, preterite (with -IR stem change: sintió in the ellos form → sentí in yo), preterite, present perfect × 3, near future, present + simple future.


Passage 2 — Sermon Excerpt (Higher Density, Mixed Groups)

Deliver in units of 2–3 sentences. Partner pauses at the slash marks.

La Biblia dice que en el principio, Dios creó los cielos y la tierra. / Dios habló, y todo existió. / Su Palabra tiene poder para crear lo que no existe.

Pero el hombre pecó, y la muerte entró al mundo. / Por generaciones, la humanidad vivió separada de Dios. / Buscaba la paz, pero no la encontraba.

Entonces Dios hizo lo que nosotros no podíamos hacer. / Envió a su Hijo al mundo. / Jesús vino, sufrió, murió, y resucitó.

English target:

The Bible says that in the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. / God spoke, and everything came into existence. / His Word has the power to create what does not exist.

But man sinned, and death entered the world. / For generations, humanity lived separated from God. / It sought peace, but could not find it.

Then God did what we could not do. / He sent his Son into the world. / Jesus came, suffered, died, and rose again.

Today Christ lives, and he has opened the way to the Father. / Everyone who believes in him receives eternal life. / God has fulfilled his promise.

Have you received this gift? / Have you given your life to the one who died for you? / If you have not done so, today is the day.

You are going to leave here different. / God is going to fulfill his promises in your life. / And Christ will come to live in you.


Passage 3 — Mission Report (Narrative, All Three Groups Active)

El año pasado, nuestro equipo fue a una región muy remota. Vivimos en la comunidad durante tres semanas. Hablamos con líderes, ancianos, y familias jóvenes. Construimos relaciones de confianza con la gente. Compartimos el evangelio en homes, en la calle, y en pequeñas reuniones. Muchas personas escucharon por primera vez. Algunos siguieron a Cristo. Otros pidieron más tiempo. Un anciano, que nunca había creído en nada, oyó el evangelio y lloró. Dijo: “Toda mi vida esperaba escuchar esto.” La iglesia local recibió a los nuevos creyentes con gozo. English target:

Last year, our team went to a very remote region. We lived in the community for three weeks. We spoke with leaders, elders, and young families. We built trust relationships with the people. We shared the gospel in homes, in the street, and in small meetings. Many people heard for the first time. Some followed Christ. Others asked for more time. An elder, who had never believed in anything, heard the gospel and wept. He said: “My whole life I was waiting to hear this.” The local church received the new believers with joy. We have returned with full hearts. We are going to return next year. And we believe that God will fulfill the work He began there.


Evaluation Criteria

After each passage, evaluate using these four categories:

1. Tense Accuracy

Did every imperfect come through as imperfect in English (“used to / was [verb]ing”)? Did every preterite come through as simple past (“did / verb-ed”)? Did present perfect come through as “have + participle”? Did near future come through as “going to”? Did simple future come through as “will”?

2. Verb Group Identification

Did you correctly process -IR-exclusive forms? Specifically: stem-changed preterites (siguieron, sirvieron, sintió), -go yo forms, and irregular -IR participles (dicho, escrito, muerto, abierto)?

3. Meaning Fidelity

Did the theological content survive? Key checks:

  • Did Christ’s death and resurrection come through as preterite (completed historical events)?
  • Did the ongoing faith and service come through as imperfect or present?
  • Did God’s faithfulness come through as present perfect (past action with ongoing relevance)?

4. Fluency

Where did you hesitate? Hesitation points indicate forms that are not yet automatic. Each hesitation is a data point for further drilling.


Practice Exercises

Exercise 1 — Full Passage Consecutive Interpretation

Record yourself interpreting all three passages consecutively. Play back and evaluate against the English targets and the four criteria above.

Exercise 2 — Role-Reversal

Interpret from English to Spanish using the three passages. This tests production fluency in the reverse direction — useful for contexts where the interpreter helps an English speaker address a Spanish-speaking congregation.

Exercise 3 — Speed Variation

A partner reads Passage 1 at 50%, 75%, and 100% of normal speaking speed. You interpret at each speed level. Identify which speed begins to cause errors — that threshold is your current working limit.

Exercise 4 — Error Analysis

After completing the self-recorded interpretation, listen for every place where a tense was rendered incorrectly in English. For each error: name the Spanish tense, name the tense you produced in English, and name the correct English equivalent. This targeted analysis identifies specific weak points.
