Ojalá without que is also used: Ojalá pueda venir. — Hopefully she can come / I hope she can come.
The Interpretation Drill: Anticipatory Processing
From the curriculum:
Interpretation drill: Hear a subjunctive trigger in incoming Spanish. Predict that subjunctive is coming. Prepare your English rendering before the verb arrives. This anticipatory processing is a core simultaneous interpretation skill.
The target state: when you hear Es importante que… — before the verb even arrives — your English rendering engine is already producing “It’s important that…” or “It’s important for [someone] to…” and waiting for the verb.
This is called anticipatory processing. The trigger contains enough information to begin the English rendering before the subjunctive verb is spoken.
The three trigger-to-rendering pipelines:
Espero que… → “I hope that…” → wait for verb → venga → “comes” → full: “I hope he comes.” Es importante que… → “It’s important that…” → wait for verb → ores → “you pray” → full: “It’s important that you pray.” Dudo que… → “I doubt that…” → wait for verb → sea verdad → “that’s true” → full: “I doubt that’s true.”
Indicative vs. Subjunctive: Contrast Pairs
Some verbs take the indicative or the subjunctive depending on the meaning:
| Indicative (statement of fact) | Subjunctive (doubt/negation) |
|---|---|
| Creo que viene. (I believe he is coming.) | No creo que venga. (I don’t believe he is coming.) |
| Es verdad que Dios existe. (It is true that God exists.) | No es verdad que Dios nos haya abandonado. (It is not true that God has abandoned us.) |
| Es obvio que el Señor está obrando. (It is obvious that the Lord is working.) | No es obvio que sea la voluntad de Dios. (It is not obvious that it is God’s will.) |
Mixed Ministry Passages
Passage 1 — Sermon Excerpt
Hermanos, es importante que busquemos a Dios con todo el corazón. No basta con venir los domingos. Dios desea que lo conozcamos de manera profunda y personal. Espero que cada uno de ustedes tome la decisión de crecer en su fe. Es posible que haya obstáculos en el camino, pero Dios es más grande que cualquier obstáculo. No creo que exista ningún problema que el Señor no pueda resolver. Ojalá que salgamos de aquí comprometidos a seguirle más de cerca.
WEIRDO analysis:
- es importante que busquemos — I (impersonal)
- desea que lo conozcamos — W (wish)
- Espero que tome — W (wish/hope)
- Es posible que haya — I (impersonal)
- No creo que exista — D (doubt)
- Ojalá que salgamos — O (ojalá)
Passage 2 — Pastoral Prayer
Señor, quiero que seas glorificado en todo lo que hacemos. Pido que tu Espíritu venga sobre esta congregación. Es bueno que estemos aquí juntos. Me alegra que muchos hayan venido esta noche. Temo que algunos de los que están aquí todavía no te conozcan personalmente. Ruego que abras sus corazones. Ojalá que nadie salga de aquí sin haberte encontrado.
Practice Exercises
Exercise 1 — WEIRDO Category Identification
A partner reads sentences. You identify the WEIRDO category immediately:
Espero que vengas. → W (wish) Me alegra que estés aquí. → E (emotion) Es posible que llueva. → I (impersonal) El pastor sugiere que oremos. → R (recommendation) Dudo que sea verdad. → D (doubt) Ojalá que haya un avivamiento. → O (ojalá)
Exercise 2 — Anticipatory Processing Drill
A partner reads a trigger phrase. You begin the English rendering immediately and hold until the verb arrives:
Quiero que… → “I want you to…” [pause] vengas → “come.” Es importante que… → “It’s important that…” [pause] ores → “you pray.” Dudo que… → “I doubt that…” [pause] sea verdad → “is true.” Ojalá que… → “May…” [pause] vengan → “they come.”
Exercise 3 — Passage WEIRDO Analysis
Read both mixed passages above. For each subjunctive verb, name: (a) the trigger, (b) the WEIRDO category, (c) the English rendering.
Exercise 4 — Ministry Passage Production
Produce a 6–8 sentence sermon excerpt that uses at least one example from each WEIRDO category. Deliver it aloud as if preaching.
Key Takeaways for This Lesson
Before moving to Lesson 4:
- WEIRDO: Wishes, Emotion, Impersonal, Recommendation, Doubt/Denial, Ojalá
- Every subjunctive trigger belongs to one of these six categories
- Anticipatory processing: the trigger provides enough information to begin the English rendering before the subjunctive verb arrives
- Creo que (I believe that) takes the indicative; No creo que (I don’t believe that) takes the subjunctive
- Ojalá is ministry-specific and always takes the subjunctive — it expresses wish or hope in a devotional register
Daily Practice
The three trigger-to-English pipelines as a daily sequence:
Espero que… → I hope that… Es importante que… → It’s important that… Dudo que… → I doubt that…
Complete each with a verb and English rendering. Rotate through all six WEIRDO categories over the week, using a different trigger from each category each day.
