Why Prayer Is the Hardest Context
The curriculum notes:
Prayer is saturated with subjunctive forms in Spanish. An interpreter who cannot handle the subjunctive will struggle most visibly in prayer interpretation — which is often the most emotionally significant moment of a service.
Prayer is where all subjunctive categories converge simultaneously:
- Wishes/petitions: Pido que sanes…, Quiero que estés…
- Emotion: Me alegra que escuches…
- Impersonal: Es importante que tú, Señor…
- Hortatory subjunctive: Que seas glorificado…
- Conjunctions: Para que tu nombre sea conocido…, Aunque no merecemos…
- Doubt: spoken negatively — No hay nada que pueda separarnos…
An interpreter who hesitates at subjunctive forms will fall apart in prayer interpretation. This lesson provides the concentrated exposure needed to build prayer-level subjunctive fluency.
The Hortatory Subjunctive
The hortatory subjunctive is the free-standing subjunctive — not triggered by a main verb, but standing alone as an expression of wish, command, or invocation:
Que seas glorificado, Señor. — May you be glorified, Lord. Que tu reino venga. — Your kingdom come. / May your kingdom come. Que se haga tu voluntad. — Your will be done. / May your will be done. Que haya paz en esta nación. — May there be peace in this nation. Que muchos vengan a los pies de Cristo. — May many come to the feet of Christ.
From the curriculum: Que seas glorificado, Señor. (May you be glorified, Lord.) Que tu reino venga. Que se haga tu voluntad. (Your kingdom come. Your will be done.) Pido que sanes a los enfermos. (I ask that you heal the sick.) Ojalá que muchos vengan a los pies de Cristo. (May many come to the feet of Christ.)
The Lord’s Prayer: A Subjunctive Reference Text
The Lord’s Prayer (Matthew 6:9–13) is one of the most subjunctive-dense passages in the Christian tradition. It is also one of the most interpreted texts in ministry settings. Every interpreter should know it in Spanish and understand the subjunctive forms it contains.
Spanish (common liturgical version):
Padre nuestro, que estás en los cielos, santificado sea tu nombre. Venga tu reino. Hágase tu voluntad, en la tierra como en el cielo. Danos hoy nuestro pan de cada día. Perdónanos nuestras deudas, como también nosotros perdonamos a nuestros deudores. Y no nos metas en tentación, sino líbranos del mal. Porque tuyo es el reino, el poder y la gloria, por siempre jamás. Amén.
Subjunctive forms:
- santificado sea — hortatory subjunctive: “May your name be hallowed”
- Venga tu reino — hortatory subjunctive: “May your kingdom come”
- Hágase tu voluntad — hortatory subjunctive: “May your will be done”
- perdónanos — command (imperative) — not subjunctive but used alongside it
English target:
Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come. Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For yours is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.
Prayer Language Patterns for Interpretation
Petition Patterns
Pido que… → “I ask that…” / “I pray that…” Ruego que… → “I beg that…” / “I implore that…” Te pido, Señor, que… → “I ask you, Lord, to…” Clamo a ti para que… → “I cry out to you so that…”
Sentences: Pido que sanes a los enfermos de esta comunidad. — I ask that you heal the sick in this community. Te pido, Señor, que abras las puertas para este ministerio. — I ask you, Lord, to open the doors for this ministry. Clamo a ti para que haya un avivamiento en esta nación. — I cry out to you for there to be a revival in this nation. Ruego que tu Espíritu venga sobre nosotros ahora. — I beg that your Spirit come upon us now.
Intercession Patterns
Pido por [person] que… → “I pray for [person] that…” Te pido que [person/pronoun]… → “I ask that you… [regarding this person]” Intercedo para que… → “I intercede so that…”
Sentences: Pido por los enfermos que reciban tu sanidad. — I pray for the sick that they receive your healing. Intercedo por las naciones para que tu nombre sea conocido. — I intercede for the nations so that your name may be known. Pido por los que no te conocen — que alguien les lleve la Palabra. — I pray for those who don’t know you — that someone will bring them the Word.
Praise and Acknowledgment
Me alegra que seas fiel. — I am glad that you are faithful. Es maravilloso que hayas enviado a tu Hijo. — It is wonderful that you sent your Son. Te glorificamos porque tu nombre sea grande. — We glorify you because your name may be great.
Hortatory Declarations in Prayer
Que seas exaltado en esta nación. — May you be exalted in this nation. Que tu luz brille en la oscuridad. — May your light shine in the darkness. Que los perdidos sean hallados. — May the lost be found. Que la iglesia sea fuerte y unida. — May the church be strong and united. Que haya paz donde hay guerra. — May there be peace where there is war.
Sermon Language: Subjunctive in Instruction and Exhortation
Instruction / Command
Es necesario que leamos la Biblia diariamente. — It is necessary that we read the Bible daily. Es vital que cada creyente esté conectado a una comunidad. — It is vital that every believer be connected to a community. Es fundamental que el líder sea hombre de oración. — It is fundamental that the leader be a man of prayer.
Conditional Exhortation
Para que haya avivamiento, es necesario que nos arrepintamos. — For there to be revival, it is necessary that we repent. Para que Dios obre, es necesario que creamos. — For God to work, it is necessary that we believe. A menos que volvamos a Dios, no habrá transformación. — Unless we return to God, there will be no transformation.
Pastoral Desire
Quiero que esta iglesia crezca en la Palabra. — I want this church to grow in the Word. Mi deseo es que cada uno de ustedes encuentre su propósito en Cristo. — My desire is that each of you find your purpose in Christ. Espero que cuando salgan de aquí, salgan transformados. — I hope that when you leave here, you leave transformed.

To be read by a partner, sentence by sentence. Pause for interpretation after each period.
Padre celestial, nos acercamos a ti con humildad. Te damos gracias porque eres fiel y tu misericordia nunca falla. Me alegra que hayas enviado a tu Hijo para que pudiéramos tener vida. Que tu nombre sea glorificado en este lugar esta noche.
Señor, pido que tu Espíritu Santo venga sobre cada persona aquí. Es posible que haya personas que nunca te han pedido perdón. Ruego que esta noche sea el momento en que abran su corazón. Que no haya nadie que salga de aquí sin haberte encontrado.

Evaluation Questions
After completing the interpretation:
- Hortatory subjunctive: Did every que + subjunctive at the start of a sentence come through as “May…”?
- Petition verbs: Did pido que, ruego que, intercedo para que come through with appropriate English register (ask / beg / intercede)?
- Impersonal expressions: Did es posible que haya come through as “It is possible that there are”?
- Emotion clauses: Did Me alegra que hayas enviado come through as “I am glad that you sent”?
- Purpose conjunctions: Did para que pudiéramos tener vida come through as “so that we might have life”?
- Emotional register: Did the prayer sound like a prayer in English — not like a grammar exercise? Was the warmth and intimacy of the original preserved?

The Unit 10 daily maintenance routine:
- Two present subjunctive sentences: one with a WEIRDO trigger, one with para que or another conjunction
- One hortatory subjunctive declaration: Que [subjunctive]…
- One past subjunctive reported speech sentence
- One sentence each for the 5 always-subjunctive conjunctions (rotate through weekly)
The subjunctive is not a one-time learning event — it is a system that must be practiced until recognition and production are reflex. Every prayer you interpret in Spanish from this point forward is subjunctive practice. Approach every prayer as a lab.
