Unit 10 — The Subjunctive Mood

Interpretation Lab — Consecutive Interpretation Practice (Spanish → English)


Purpose

The subjunctive is the interpreter’s most technically demanding grammatical challenge. In English the subjunctive has nearly disappeared — we say “I want you to come” rather than “I want that you come.” In Spanish it is alive in every prayer, every sermon appeal, every pastoral wish, every expression of doubt or hope. The interpreter who cannot process subjunctive forms instantly will consistently misrender the most spiritually weighty moments of a service.

The core challenge is not recognizing that the subjunctive is present — an experienced interpreter does that automatically. The challenge is producing its natural English equivalent in real time without distorting the meaning or the emotional register. Que Dios te bendiga is not “That God bless you” — it is “God bless you” or “May God bless you.” The grammar difference is invisible in English, but the interpreter must hear the subjunctive in Spanish and immediately reach for the natural English form, not a word-for-word equivalent.

Lab 1 — Prayer (Present Subjunctive: Wish and Petition)

Key distinction: In English, “may you be glorified” and “be glorified” are both acceptable. “That you be glorified” without “may” sounds archaic. Never render que seas glorificado as “that you are glorified” — that is indicative, not subjunctive.


Lab 7 — Full Integration: 3-Minute Extemporaneous Prayer

This is the core lab from the curriculum. A complete prayer in natural spoken Spanish — the kind of extemporaneous pastoral prayer that appears in every service. Subjunctive forms are distributed across all categories. Your task is to maintain continuous English output without hesitating on any subjunctive form.
