The 21 Terms: Definitions and Rendering
la iglesia — the church
Both the universal body of Christ and the local congregation. Context determines which.
English: the church In phrases: la iglesia local → the local church; plantar una iglesia → to plant a church; el cuerpo de Cristo es la iglesia → the body of Christ is the church
el pastor — the pastor
The primary teaching and shepherding leader of a local congregation. In Latin American evangelical usage, pastor is the default title for the lead minister — equivalent to “pastor” in English.
English: the pastor In phrases: el pastor principal → the senior pastor; el pastor de jóvenes → the youth pastor; así dijo el pastor → as the pastor said
Note: pastor in Spanish is also the word for shepherd. In sermon contexts this dual meaning is often invoked: el Pastor (capitalized) refers to Christ the Good Shepherd.
el evangelista — the evangelist
A person gifted and called to proclaim the gospel — often itinerant.
English: the evangelist In phrases: un evangelista itinerante → a traveling evangelist; el don de evangelista → the gift of evangelist
el misionero — the missionary
A person sent to cross cultural or geographic boundaries with the gospel.
English: the missionary In phrases: un misionero de largo plazo → a long-term missionary; el campo misionero → the mission field; apoyar a los misioneros → to support missionaries
el discipulado — discipleship
The process of intentional spiritual formation — teaching, training, and mentoring new believers.
English: discipleship In phrases: el programa de discipulado → the discipleship program; hacer discipulado → to do discipleship / to disciple; el discipulado uno a uno → one-on-one discipleship
la congregación — the congregation
The gathered body of believers in a given church. More formal than la iglesia in speech — refers specifically to the people present.

el culto — the worship service
In Latin American evangelical usage, el culto refers to the church service or worship gathering. This is a common false cognate trap: culto does not mean “cult” in this context.

Interpreter alert: Never render el culto as “the cult.” It means “the worship service” or simply “the service.”
la adoración — worship / praise
The act of expressing reverence, love, and honor to God — through song, prayer, and life.
English: worship In phrases: el tiempo de adoración → the time of worship; liderar la adoración → to lead worship; vivir una vida de adoración → to live a life of worship
el sermón — the sermon
The prepared message delivered from the pulpit.
English: the sermon In phrases: predicar un sermón → to preach a sermon; el sermón de esta mañana → this morning’s sermon; escuchar el sermón → to listen to the sermon
la predicación — preaching / the preaching
The act or ministry of preaching — as an ongoing practice or a specific instance.
English: preaching / the preaching In phrases: el don de la predicación → the gift of preaching; la predicación expositiva → expository preaching; la predicación del evangelio → the preaching of the gospel
Distinction: el sermón = the specific message (a noun); la predicación = the act of preaching (an activity or ministry). “She preached a sermon” → predicó un sermón; “His ministry of preaching” → su ministerio de predicación.
el diezmo — the tithe
Ten percent of income given to the church. Common in financial appeals and stewardship teaching.
English: the tithe In phrases: traer el diezmo → to bring the tithe; el diezmo y las ofrendas → tithes and offerings; honrar a Dios con el diezmo → to honor God with the tithe
la ofrenda — the offering
Any financial or material gift given to the church, distinct from the tithe.
English: the offering In phrases: pasar la ofrenda → to take up the offering; dar una ofrenda especial → to give a special offering; las ofrendas voluntarias → voluntary offerings
el liderazgo — leadership
The people who lead the church and the function of leading.
English: leadership In phrases: el equipo de liderazgo → the leadership team; desarrollar el liderazgo → to develop leadership; el liderazgo de la iglesia → the church leadership
el anciano — the elder
A recognized leader in the church, often with teaching and governance responsibility. From the Greek presbyteros.
English: the elder In phrases: el consejo de ancianos → the council of elders; los ancianos de la iglesia → the elders of the church; ser nombrado anciano → to be appointed as an elder
Note: in some Latin American contexts anciano simply means “old man” — context (church setting) makes the ministry meaning clear.
el diácono — the deacon
A servant-leader in the church, focused on practical ministry and care. From the Greek diakonos (servant).
English: the deacon In phrases: los diáconos de la iglesia → the deacons of the church; servir como diácono → to serve as a deacon
la misión — the mission
The calling and task of the church to reach the world with the gospel. Also refers to a specific mission organization or project.
English: the mission In phrases: la Gran Comisión es nuestra misión → the Great Commission is our mission; salir en misión → to go out on mission; la misión de la iglesia → the church’s mission
el llamado — the calling / the call
God’s specific calling to a person for a vocation, ministry, or assignment.
English: the calling / the call In phrases: responder al llamado → to respond to the call; sentir el llamado al ministerio → to feel the call to ministry; confirmar el llamado → to confirm the calling
la visión — the vision
The God-given direction and purpose for a ministry or church.
English: the vision In phrases: la visión de la iglesia → the church’s vision; compartir la visión → to share the vision; sin visión el pueblo perece → without vision the people perish
el ministerio — the ministry
Any organized work of service within the church or for the kingdom. Also refers to the overall work of serving God.
English: the ministry / ministry In phrases: el ministerio de niños → children’s ministry; entrar al ministerio → to enter ministry; servir en el ministerio → to serve in ministry
la comunidad — the community / the congregation
Can refer to the local geographic community, the church community, or a small group community. Context determines which.
English: the community / the congregation / the group In phrases: la comunidad de fe → the faith community; alcanzar a la comunidad → to reach the community (surrounding neighborhood); nuestra comunidad de creyentes → our community of believers
el cuerpo de Cristo — the body of Christ
Paul’s metaphor for the church — members with different gifts functioning together.
English: the body of Christ In phrases: somos el cuerpo de Cristo → we are the body of Christ; cada miembro del cuerpo → every member of the body; edificar el cuerpo de Cristo → to build up the body of Christ
False Cognate Alert: el culto
This bears repetition because it is a common error that creates confusion or offense:
el culto = the worship service ✓ el culto ≠ “the cult” ✗
In a ministry setting, if a Spanish speaker says “nuestro culto empieza a las diez,” the correct interpretation is “our service starts at ten,” not anything related to a cult. This false cognate trips up English-speaking interpreters who are not yet deeply embedded in the ministry vocabulary register.

Exercise 1 — Speed Recognition Drill
A partner reads terms randomly. You give the English in under 2 seconds:

Reverse: partner reads English, you produce Spanish.
Exercise 2 — Ministry Announcement Interpretation
A partner reads the following church announcement. You interpret consecutively:
Hermanos, este domingo tendremos un culto especial. El pastor visitante predicará un sermón sobre el llamado al ministerio. Después del sermón, pasaremos la ofrenda para apoyar a los misioneros en el campo. Les recordamos también que el programa de discipulado comienza el jueves. Hablen con los ancianos si tienen preguntas. Los diáconos estarán disponibles para oración después del culto.
Target:
Brothers and sisters, this Sunday we will have a special service. The visiting pastor will preach a sermon on the call to ministry. After the sermon, we will take up the offering to support the missionaries in the field. We also remind you that the discipleship program begins on Thursday. Speak with the elders if you have questions. The deacons will be available for prayer after the service.
Exercise 3 — Role Introduction Interpretation
A partner reads this ministry leader introduction. You interpret:
Quiero presentarles al hermano Marcos. Hace cinco años que sirve como misionero en Bolivia. Antes de eso, fue diácono en su iglesia por tres años. Hoy trabaja en el discipulado de nuevos creyentes y en el liderazgo de la iglesia local que plantó hace dos años. Su visión es ver una congregación en cada aldea de su región.
Target:
I want to introduce Brother Marcos to you. He has been serving as a missionary in Bolivia for five years. Before that, he served as a deacon in his church for three years. Today he works in discipling new believers and in the leadership of the local church he planted two years ago. His vision is to see a congregation in every village of his region.
Exercise 4 — Vocabulary Audit
Without notes, list all 21 terms in Spanish from memory. Check yourself against the lesson. For any you missed: write it three times, produce a ministry sentence with it, and interpret that sentence aloud.
