Object Pronoun Reference

The le → se change: when both the indirect pronoun (le or les) and a direct pronoun (lo, la, los, las) appear together, the indirect pronoun le/les changes to se:
le + lo → se lo le + la → se la les + los → se los les + las → se las
This applies only when both pronouns are third-person. Me lo, te lo, nos lo do NOT change.
The Curriculum Anchor Sentences
From the curriculum: Te lo digo con amor. Se lo expliqué tres veces. ¿Me lo puedes repetir?
Te lo digo con amor. — I tell it to you with love.
Te = indirect (to you); lo = direct (it) → No change needed because te is second person.
Ministry applications: Te lo digo con amor: necesitas arrepentirte. — I tell you this with love: you need to repent. Te lo digo porque me importas. — I tell you this because you matter to me. Te lo prometo en el nombre del Señor. — I promise it to you in the name of the Lord.
Se lo expliqué tres veces. — I explained it to him/her three times.
Se (changed from le) = indirect (to him/her); lo = direct (it) → le + lo → se lo applies here.
Ministry applications: Se lo dije claramente: Dios te ama. — I told him/her clearly: God loves you. El pastor se lo explicó con paciencia. — The pastor explained it to him/her patiently. Se lo compartí tres veces antes de que lo recibiera. — I shared it with him/her three times before he/she received it. ¿Se lo has dicho a tu familia? — Have you told it to your family? (i.e., the gospel)
¿Me lo puedes repetir? — Can you repeat it to me?
Me = indirect (to me); lo = direct (it) → No change (me is first person).
Professional ministry applications: ¿Me lo puedes repetir más despacio? — Can you repeat it to me more slowly? ¿Me lo puede decir de otra manera? — Can you say it to me in another way? ¿Me lo puede deletrear? — Can you spell it for me?
Pronoun Placement Rules
1. Before a conjugated verb
Lo predico. Te amo. Se lo dije.
The pronoun(s) precede the conjugated verb. This is the standard position.
Dios te ama. — God loves you. Lo proclamamos en toda la ciudad. — We proclaimed it throughout the city. Se lo di al pastor. — I gave it to the pastor.
2. Before or after infinitive or gerund (attached = also correct)
Quiero decírtelo. or Te lo quiero decir. — I want to tell it to you. Estoy explicándoselo. or Se lo estoy explicando. — I am explaining it to him/her.
In fast speech, the attached form often predominates because the pronouns cluster at the end of the infinitive or gerund: decírtelo, explicándoselo.
3. Attached to affirmative commands (never to negative)
Díselo. — Tell it to him/her. (di + se + lo; accent mark added to preserve stress) No se lo digas. — Don’t tell it to him/her. (pronouns before verb in negative)
Compártelo. — Share it. No lo compartas. — Don’t share it.
The Oral Placement Drill
From the curriculum:
Oral placement drill: Hear sentences with full noun objects. Convert to pronoun form instantly. Doy el libro al pastor. → Se lo doy.
Drill format: a partner reads a full noun-object sentence. You convert to pronoun form and produce the sentence:
Doy el libro al pastor. → Se lo doy. (Indirect: al pastor → le → se; Direct: el libro → lo)
Expliqué el evangelio a María. → Se lo expliqué. Compartí la Palabra con los jóvenes. → Se la compartí. Presté la Biblia a mi vecino. → Se la presté. Enseñé la canción a los niños. → Se la enseñé. Di la ofrenda al diácono. → Se la di. Mandé el mensaje al pastor. → Se lo mandé. Leí el pasaje a la congregación. → Se lo leí.
Speed target: zero hesitation. If you pause to reason through the pronoun change, the skill is not yet internalized. Drill until the conversion is reflex.
Topic Fronting and Doubling
In natural spoken Spanish, object nouns are often stated at the beginning of a sentence (topic-fronted) and then doubled with a pronoun:
El evangelio, lo predicamos en toda la región. — The gospel — we preached it throughout the region. A María, le dije la verdad con amor. — As for María — I told her the truth with love. Esa promesa, Dios la cumplirá. — That promise — God will fulfill it. El mensaje, se lo di al pastor antes del culto. — The message — I gave it to the pastor before the service.
This doubling is extremely common in natural spoken Spanish, especially in preaching and testimony. The interpreter hears the topic noun first, then the pronoun. In English, topic fronting is less natural — usually render as a normal subject-verb-object sentence:
El evangelio, lo predicamos. → “We preached the gospel.” (not “The gospel, we preached it.”) A los pobres, Dios los ama. → “God loves the poor.” (not “The poor, God loves them.”)
Ministry Pronoun Patterns in Live Speech
Testimony: Le hablé del evangelio. Se lo expliqué con mucho amor. Al principio no quería escucharlo. Pero se lo repetí. Y un día, lo recibió. → I spoke to him about the gospel. I explained it to him with great love. At first he didn’t want to hear it. But I repeated it to him. And one day, he received it.
Pastoral instruction: El amor de Dios — muéstraselo a tu familia. No te lo guardes. Compártelo. Si tienes una carga, dísela a Dios. Él te la quitará. → God’s love — show it to your family. Don’t keep it to yourself. Share it. If you have a burden, tell it to God. He will take it from you.
Commission: La Gran Comisión nos la dio Cristo. Él nos la confió. No la ignoremos. Cumplámosla. → The Great Commission was given to us by Christ. He entrusted it to us. Let us not ignore it. Let us fulfill it.

Exercise 1 — Le → Se Change Identification
Identify which sentences require the le → se change:
Le doy el libro. → No change needed (only one pronoun) Le lo doy. → Incorrect form → Se lo doy. ✓ (le + lo → se lo) Te lo digo. → No change (te is second person) Me lo explica. → No change (me is first person) Le la presté. → Incorrect form → Se la presté. ✓ (le + la → se la) Les los mandé. → Incorrect form → Se los mandé. ✓ (les + los → se los)
Exercise 2 — Oral Placement Drill
A partner reads. You produce the pronoun version instantly:
Digo la verdad al joven. → Se la digo. Explico el plan de salvación a los visitantes. → Se lo explico. Presto mi Biblia a mi hermano. → Se la presto. Doy el mensaje al pastor. → Se lo doy. Enseño los cánticos a los niños. → Se los enseño. Leo el versículo a la congregación. → Se lo leo.
Exercise 3 — Ministry Passage Interpretation
Interpret consecutively, tracking each pronoun cluster:
Hermanos, Dios nos dio un mensaje — nos lo confió para que lo compartamos. No nos lo dio para guardarlo. Cuando alguien te pregunte por tu fe, dísela con claridad. El evangelio, compártelo. La esperanza que tienes, muéstrasela al que está sufriendo. Te lo pido hoy: no te quedes callado. Dios te lo ha dado — dáselo a otros.
Target:
Brothers and sisters, God gave us a message — He entrusted it to us so that we would share it. He didn’t give it to us to keep it. When someone asks you about your faith, tell it to them clearly. The gospel — share it. The hope that you have — show it to the one who is suffering. I ask it of you today: don’t stay silent. God has given it to you — give it to others.
Exercise 4 — Attached Pronouns with Infinitives and Commands
Produce five ministry sentences using attached pronouns with infinitives or commands. Then interpret them:
Quiero contártelo. — I want to tell it to you. Necesitamos compartírselo. — We need to share it with them. Díselo con amor. — Tell it to him/her with love. No se lo escondas. — Don’t hide it from him/her. Vamos a dárselo mañana. — We’re going to give it to him/her tomorrow.
