16–19 are compound words
Numbers 16–19 are built from dieci- (a contraction of diez y = ten and) plus the ones digit: dieciséis = ten-and-six. Say them as one word.
Grammar Focus: Numbers and Gender Agreement
Most numbers don’t change for gender, but uno does:
- uno becomes un before a masculine noun: un hombre (one man)
- uno becomes una before a feminine noun: una mujer (one woman)
Also:
- “There are ___” = Hay ___ (remember: hay = there is / there are — same word for both!)
- Hay cinco personas. (There are five people.)
- Hay un niño. (There is one boy.)
Asking quantities:
- ¿Cuántos niños hay? (How many boys are there?)
- ¿Cuántas personas vinieron? (How many people came?)
- Use cuántos for masculine nouns, cuántas for feminine nouns
Numbers in Mission Contexts

Story: Distribuyendo Biblias (Distributing Bibles)
El equipo misionero llega a una escuela. Traen veinte Biblias para los estudiantes. La directora habla con Sara.
Directora: — ¿Cuántas Biblias tienen?
Sara: — Tenemos veinte Biblias.
Directora: — Tenemos dieciséis estudiantes hoy. ¿Pueden quedarse con cuatro?
Sara: — Sí, por supuesto. ¿Cuántos niños y cuántas niñas son?
Directora: — Nueve niños y siete niñas.
Sara: — Perfecto. ¿Cuántos años tienen los estudiantes?
Directora: — Entre diez y quince años.

(The mission team arrives at a school. They bring twenty Bibles for the students… “We have sixteen students today. Can you keep four?” “Yes, of course… Nine boys and seven girls.” “Perfect.”)

Round 1: Count from 1 to 20 out loud, then count backwards from 20 to 1.
Round 2: Answer these questions out loud:
- ¿Cuántos años tienes? (How old are you?)
- ¿Cuántas personas hay en tu familia? (How many people are in your family?)
- ¿Cuántas Biblias necesitas para tu grupo? (How many Bibles do you need for your group?)
Round 3: Read this Bible reference out loud: Juan tres dieciséis — Mateo cinco, tres — Salmos uno, uno
Cultural Note
In Latin America, street addresses often use numbers differently than in the United States. Many cities use a grid system where streets are numbered (Calle 3, Calle 15, Avenida 7). House numbers may be small (house #4 on Calle 3) rather than the four-digit systems common in the US. Asking ¿Cuál es la dirección? (What is the address?) and ¿En qué calle está? (On which street is it?) will get you far.
