Grammar Focus: Estar — Expressing Location
Remember: Ser is for permanent identity. Estar is for location and temporary states.
To say where something is (located), use estar:

Examples:
- La iglesia está en la Calle Cinco. — The church is on Fifth Street.

- ¿Dónde está el mercado? — Where is the market?
- Estamos en el centro. — We are downtown.

Story: El Mapa del Barrio (The Neighborhood Map)
La pastora Elena le muestra a Sara un mapa del barrio donde van a trabajar.
Pastora Elena: — Aquí está nuestra iglesia — en el centro del barrio. A la derecha de la iglesia hay una escuela primaria. Enfrente de la iglesia está el parque principal.
Sara: — ¿Hay una clínica cerca?
Pastora Elena: — Sí. La clínica está a tres cuadras de aquí, detrás del mercado. El mercado está en la Avenida Principal.
Sara: — ¿Y el orfanato? El equipo quiere visitar a los niños.
Pastora Elena: — El orfanato está en las afueras del barrio, a unos diez minutos a pie. Puedo llevarlos mañana.
Sara: — Perfecto. ¿Hay un comedor comunitario aquí?
Pastora Elena: — Sí, el comedor está al lado de la alcaldía. Sirven desayuno los martes y jueves.
Sara: — ¡Qué bueno! Este barrio tiene muchas necesidades pero también mucha esperanza.
(Pastor Elena shows Sara a map of the neighborhood where they will work… “The clinic is three blocks from here, behind the market.” “The orphanage is on the outskirts of the neighborhood, about ten minutes on foot.” “This neighborhood has many needs but also a lot of hope.”)

¡Practícalo! (Speaking Practice)
Draw a simple map (on paper) of the community you’ll serve, or imagine one. Then describe it out loud using at least six sentences:
- La iglesia está en…
- Al lado de la iglesia hay…
- El mercado está cerca de / lejos de…
- Entre ___ y ___ está…
Practice until you can give a simple verbal “tour” of the neighborhood without looking at your notes.
Cultural Note
La plaza central: In nearly every Latin American town and city, life revolves around a central square or plaza — often surrounded by a church (usually Catholic), the municipal building, and shops. The plaza is where families walk on Sunday evenings, where political events happen, where vendors sell food, and where community life is visible. It’s an ideal first stop for understanding a community. Sitting in the plaza for an hour tells you more about local culture than any guidebook.

Before you map out the community, let God map out your priorities. El reino de Dios is in every barrio.
