In the Community


Unit 2 takes you out of the introductions and into the streets, markets, and daily rhythms of Latin American life. By the end of these twelve lessons, you will be able to get around, buy food, order a meal, talk about your daily activities, and express what you like and don’t like — all in Spanish.

Unit 2 Learning Goals:

  • Ask for and give directions
  • Use public transportation
  • Shop at a market and negotiate a price
  • Order food in a restaurant
  • Master ser vs. estar — the two most essential verbs
  • Use tener and hay for possession and existence
  • Describe your home
  • Conjugate regular present-tense verbs (-ar, -er, -ir)
  • Express likes and dislikes with gustar
  • Describe people’s appearance and character
  • Handle money and shopping transactions
