Grammar Focus: Imperative (Command) Forms for Directions
When giving directions, you use command forms:

Examples:
- Doble a la derecha en el semáforo. — Turn right at the traffic light.
- Siga recto dos cuadras. — Go straight two blocks.
- Cruce la avenida y queda a la izquierda. — Cross the avenue and it’s on the left.
- Tome el autobús número cinco. — Take bus number 5.
Story: Perdido en el Centro (Lost Downtown)
Marcos está perdido. Necesita encontrar la Clínica Evangélica. Para y habla con una señora en la calle.
Marcos: — Disculpe, señora. ¿Puede ayudarme? Busco la Clínica Evangélica.
Señora: — Sí, cómo no. ¿Viene a pie o en carro?
Marcos: — A pie.
Señora: — Muy bien. Siga recto por esta calle dos cuadras. Cuando llegue al semáforo, doble a la izquierda. Camine una cuadra más, y la clínica queda a la derecha, al lado de una tienda azul.
Marcos: — ¿Cuántas cuadras en total?
Señora: — Tres cuadras. No está lejos, unos cinco minutos a pie.
Marcos: — Muchas gracias, señora. Que Dios le bendiga.
Señora: — A usted también. ¡Que le vaya bien!

Give directions from the church to three places:
Choose a map (your community, a map you draw, or a real one) and practice giving verbal directions:
- From the church to the market
- From the church to the school
- From the market to the clinic
Use at least three of these phrases in each set of directions:
- Siga recto…
- Doble a la derecha / izquierda…
- Cruce la calle…
- Queda a ___ cuadras.
- Al lado de / enfrente de…
Cultural Note
Asking strangers for directions in Latin America: People are almost universally willing to help — often going well out of their way to do so. In many cases, if someone doesn’t know, they will give you a confident-sounding answer anyway (to avoid the embarrassment of not knowing). A useful strategy: ask two or three people and see if the directions converge. Phrases like “¿Está seguro?” (Are you sure?) or “¿Queda lejos?” (Is it far?) can help calibrate. And don’t be surprised if someone walks with you to your destination rather than just describing the route.
