Ser vs. Estar

  • Ser: identity, origin, profession, faith, relationships, time, inherent qualities
  • Estar: location, temporary states, emotions, ongoing actions

Tener

  • Possession: Tengo una Biblia.
  • Age: Tengo treinta años.
  • Physical feelings: Tengo hambre/sed/sueño.
  • Obligation: Tengo que ir.

Hay

  • Existence (unknown): ¿Hay una farmacia?
  • Contrast with está (known location): ¿Dónde está la farmacia?

Gustar

  • Singular/infinitive: Me gusta el café. / Me gusta orar.
  • Plural: Me gustan los frijoles.

Cumulative Scenario Practice

Work through each scenario out loud for at least 60 seconds.


Scenario 1: First day in the city

You’ve just arrived and need to get to the church. You’re at the bus station. Practice:

  • Asking if the bus goes to the church neighborhood
  • Buying a ticket (ask the price, pay, get change)
  • Asking the driver to let you know when to get off
  • Arriving and asking a local for directions to the church on foot

Scenario 2: Market run for the community meal

Your team is preparing lunch for 40 people. Practice:

  • Greeting the vendor
  • Asking what they have
  • Asking prices for rice, beans, tomatoes, and onions
  • Calculating the total and paying
  • Thanking them and mentioning the community meal

Scenario 3: Visiting a family’s home

A local family has invited you to dinner. Practice:

  • Greeting them and entering their home
  • Accepting the meal with appreciation
  • Describing what you like about the food
  • Asking about their family (names, ages, how many people live there)
  • Describing your own family in return
  • Saying goodbye at the end of the evening

Scenario 4: Talking about your day

A team member who stayed at the base asks you what you did today. Practice:

  • Using present tense verbs to describe your activities
  • Describing two or three people you met
  • Saying what you liked and didn’t like about the day
  • Mentioning how much things cost and what you bought
