How to Cite a Verse in Spanish
The format is the same as English, spoken out loud:
[Book] [chapter], [verse]
- Juan tres, dieciséis → John 3:16
- Salmos veintitrés, uno → Psalm 23:1
- Romanos diez, nueve → Romans 10:9
- Mateo veintiocho, diecinueve y veinte → Matthew 28:19–20

Story: La Búsqueda del Versículo (Looking Up the Verse)
Marcos está en una visita domiciliaria con el señor Tomás, un hombre de sesenta años que tiene muchas preguntas sobre la fe.
Tomás: — Marcos, ¿dónde dice la Biblia que hay un solo camino a Dios?
Marcos: — En Juan, capítulo catorce, versículo seis. ¿Tiene su Biblia?
Tomás: — Sí. (busca) Encontré Juan catorce. ¿Versículo seis?
Marcos: — Sí. ¿Puede leerlo?
Tomás: — “Jesús le dijo: Yo soy el camino, la verdad, y la vida; nadie viene al Padre, sino por mí.” Eso es muy claro.
Marcos: — Sí. Y en Romanos diez, nueve, dice: “Si confesares con tu boca al Señor Jesús, y creyeres en tu corazón que Dios le levantó de los muertos, serás salvo.”
Tomás: — (pausa) Eso quiere decir que yo puedo ser salvo hoy.
Marcos: — Sí, señor Tomás. Hoy mismo.
(Marcos is on a home visit with Tomás, a 60-year-old man with many questions about faith. “Marcos, where does the Bible say there is only one way to God?” … “That means I can be saved today.” “Yes, Mr. Tomás. Today.”)

Practice saying each of these references out loud until they flow naturally:
- Juan tres, dieciséis

Then read each of the ten mission verses aloud in Spanish. Don’t worry about memorizing the whole verse yet — focus on the sound and the meaning.
Cultural Note
Bible translation in Latin America: The most widely used translation in Evangelical Latin American churches is the Reina-Valera 1960 (RV60) — a revision of a 1500s Spanish Protestant translation. It uses slightly archaic language (like vosotros, habéis) but is universally respected. More modern translations include La Nueva Versión Internacional (NVI) and La Biblia de las Américas (LBLA). When working with a local church, use whatever translation they use — this shows respect and avoids confusion. Asking “¿Qué versión usan aquí?” (What version do you use here?) before a Bible study is good practice.
