Grammar Focus: Conditional Softeners
Invitations are more natural with softening language. Spanish uses conditional forms for polite requests:
- ¿Te gustaría venir? — Would you like to come?
- ¿Quisieras acompañarme? — Would you like to come with me?
- Podría pasar a recogerte. — I could come pick you up.
- Sería muy bueno tenerte allí. — It would be great to have you there.
Also useful: Si quieres… (If you want…):
- Si quieres, puedes venir conmigo. — If you want, you can come with me.
- Si tienes tiempo el domingo, te invito al culto. — If you have time Sunday, I invite you to the service.
Story: La Invitación de Sara (Sara’s Invitation)
Sara habla con Valeria, una vecina que no asiste a ninguna iglesia.
Sara: — Valeria, ¿cómo está hoy?
Valeria: — Bien, gracias, un poco cansada.
Sara: — Oiga, este sábado vamos a tener una cena comunitaria en la iglesia — para toda la comunidad, no solo para los miembros. ¿Te gustaría venir?
Valeria: — ¿Una cena? ¿Y eso qué es exactamente?
Sara: — Es una comida juntos — comida rica, música, y un tiempo corto de alabanza y oración. Dura como dos horas. Es muy relajado.
Valeria: — No sé… yo no soy muy religiosa.
Sara: — No te preocupes, no tienes que ser religiosa. Es solo una reunión de vecinos. Quiero que conozcas a las personas de la iglesia — son muy buena gente.
Valeria: — ¿Y a qué hora empieza?
Sara: — A las seis de la tarde. ¿Necesitas que te recoja?
Valeria: — (sonriendo) Está bien, voy a intentarlo.
Sara: — ¡Qué bueno! ¡Te va a gustar! El sábado paso por ti a las cinco y cuarenta y cinco.
(Sara talks with Valeria, a neighbor who doesn’t attend any church. “I’m not very religious.” “Don’t worry, you don’t have to be religious. It’s just a neighborhood gathering… I want you to meet the people at the church — they’re really good people.” “OK, I’ll give it a try.” “Great! You’ll like it! Saturday I’ll come for you at 5:45.”)

Handling Common Objections

Practice extending an invitation for each of these events:
- A Sunday morning worship service
- A community dinner at the church
- A children’s vacation Bible school program
- A youth worship night
For each invitation:
- State what it is
- Say when it starts
- Mention it’s open to everyone
- Offer help (directions, a ride)
- Make it warm and low-pressure
Cultural Note
Hospitality as invitation: In Latin American culture, an invitation is often more powerful when it’s personal and relational rather than programmatic. “Yo voy a estar allí” (I will be there) or “Me encantaría que me acompañaras” (I’d love for you to come with me) carries more weight than any flyer or announcement. People attend because of relationship, not because of programming. Be the reason they come.
