Grammar Focus: Indirect Questions
When you want to gently probe without putting someone on the spot, use indirect questions:
Direct (more confrontational): ¿Tú crees eso? (Do you believe that?) Indirect (gentler): Me pregunto si… / Me interesa saber si… (I wonder if…)
Facilitation phrases using indirect structure:
- Me gustaría saber qué piensa el grupo sobre esto. — I’d like to know what the group thinks about this.
- ¿Alguien podría compartir cómo aplica esto a su vida? — Could someone share how this applies to their life?
- Quisiera escuchar más perspectivas. — I’d like to hear more perspectives.
A Full Bible Study on John 15:5 — In Spanish
Opening: “Buenas noches a todos. Gracias por venir esta noche. Vamos a estudiar Juan quince, versículo cinco. Primero oremos. [Oración breve.]
Abran sus Biblias en Juan quince, versículo cinco. ¿Quién puede leer el versículo en voz alta?”
[A member reads: “Yo soy la vid, vosotros los pámpanos; el que permanece en mí, y yo en él, éste lleva mucho fruto; porque separados de mí nada podéis hacer.”]
Observation questions:
- ¿Qué imágenes usa Jesús en este versículo?
- ¿Qué le pasa al pámpano que no permanece en la vid?
Interpretation:
- ¿Qué significa “permanecer en mí”? ¿Cómo se hace eso en la práctica?
- Jesús dice “nada podéis hacer” separados de Él. ¿Qué tan literalmente toman eso?
Application:
- Esta semana, ¿hay algún área de su vida donde están intentando “hacer” sin depender de Cristo?
- ¿Qué es una cosa práctica que pueden hacer para permanecer más conectados a la vid?
Closing prayer: “Gracias, Señor, porque tú eres la vid y nosotros somos los pámpanos. Ayúdanos a permanecer en ti esta semana. [Individual prayers] Amén.”
Story: La Discusión en el Grupo (Group Discussion)
Durante un estudio sobre Hechos 2, surge una discusión sobre los dones del Espíritu.
Miembro 1: — Yo creo que los dones como hablar en lenguas siguen activos hoy.
Miembro 2: — Yo creo que esos dones terminaron con los apóstoles.
(Tensión en el grupo. Marcos facilita con calma.)
Marcos: — Son dos perspectivas que existen en la iglesia cristiana. Ambas están representadas por creyentes serios que aman la Biblia. Hoy nuestro objetivo no es resolver ese debate — hay libros enteros escritos sobre eso. Nuestro objetivo es preguntarnos: ¿qué nos enseña este pasaje sobre el poder del Espíritu Santo y su rol en la iglesia? ¿Podemos estar de acuerdo en eso?
Los dos: — Sí.
Marcos: — Bien. ¿Qué vemos en el texto sobre cómo el Espíritu capacita a los creyentes para el ministerio?
(The discussion about Acts 2 generates a debate about spiritual gifts. Marcos facilitates calmly. “Both perspectives exist in the Christian church. Both are held by serious believers who love the Bible. Today our goal is not to resolve that debate — entire books have been written about that. Our goal is to ask: what does this passage teach us about the power of the Holy Spirit and his role in the church?” “Yes.” “Good. What do we see in the text about how the Spirit equips believers for ministry?”)

Choose one of these passages and lead a complete 5–7 minute Bible study out loud:
- Salmos 23 (The Lord is my Shepherd)
- Mateo 5:13–16 (Salt and Light)
- Lucas 15:11–32 (The Prodigal Son)
- Romanos 12:1–2
Include: opening prayer, reading, observation questions, interpretation, application, closing prayer.
Cultural Note
Authority and the facilitator role: In many Latin American contexts, the person leading a study is seen as the authority — the “teacher” whose job is to give answers, not ask questions. Participatory, Socratic facilitation may feel odd at first. Ease into it. Begin with clear information, then gradually invite responses. Over time, groups that experience safe, nonjudgmental discussion often become deeply engaged. The format is new; the content is eternal. Trust both.
