Matthew 1

Matthew starts out with a genealogy. He is writing to a Hebrew audience, and genealogies are very important for them. He traces Joseph's (Mary's husband) lineage back through David to Abraham. This is to show that Joseph, as Jesus's legal father, has a legal claim to the throne, and can pass that claim to the throne on to Jesus - his legal son.

One thing that stands out to me about Joseph, and we will see this pattern repeated, is that God speaks to him through dreams, and he always obeys without question - no matter what that obedience will cost him.

There are a lot of interesting details about the genealogy itself. I have written up a deeper dive into that on my website: https://discipleshandbook.com/bible/gospels/jesus-genealogies.

Chuck Missler also has a 24 hour series on the book of Matthew that is very informative (he spends about an hour on each chapter): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1d5wY3iCWKA&list=PLr2f5A_4vGReaDyHWK6_lKPi6a-XpPVm-
